21 Month Old Still Not Sleeping Well

I have a 21 month old daughter. She has never slept great. I thought by now surely she would. She naps fine at daycare but has never slept through the night. We have tried everything. Co-sleeping, rocking her to sleep, cry it out, etc. Cry it out seems to get the most peaceful sleep ultimately, but we've had to go back through sleep training numerous times. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with a similar situation? I'm feeling kind of desperate especially as we start to try for a second child. Thanks so much!

Re: 21 Month Old Still Not Sleeping Well

  • DS was like that.  Still is.  He will be 5 in August.  The good news is that DD is generally a good sleeper.   Once I got pregnant with DD, I made DH take care of DS's night wakings.  That's still our routine more than 2 years later.  :)
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

My 3 year old DS has always been a terrible sleeper. Moving him to a twin bed actually helped a lot. I think it's just a lot more comfortable than the mattress on his toddler bed was. He also loves to have a bunch of blankets and make himself a little nest. But still, he gets up one time during the night about half the time. Sometimes he just wants me for a minute and then goes back to his bed and other nights he ends up sleeping with me until morning.

Fortunately my 8 month old DD is an awesome sleeper and has been since about 4 weeks old!

This seems like a silly solution, but I'm swearing by it for now!

My kids have always been great sleepers, but for the past couple months, starting around 21/22 months old, bedtime was cause for major meltdowns, no one would go to sleep, it would take at least an hour to calm one of them down and get her to just relax.

Then we decided to buy "big girl bedding" for them. We're not ready to make the switch to toddler beds, but getting them new sheets, pillows, and comforters has been a life saver! Maybe the novelty will wear off soon and we'll be back at square one, but the past couple nights it's been like a switch was flipped! They snuggle right into bed and are excited about their "new beds" for sleeping. I figure it'll help when toddler bed transition time comes, so we bought the sets a little earlier than I was planning.
I'll piggy back on this. We moved DS to a big boy bed. He already was an awful sleeper and having a big boy bed made it 1000 times worse (came into our room every night). We did three things: 1) We moved him into the room that was closest to ours 2.)We put him back in a crib 3.) We put a "tent" over his crib - it's just a sheet. But he thinks it's the coolest thing in the world. He now goes down for naps and bed and never wakes up. It's fantastic.

We told him we'd do all of that only if he slept all night long. He agreed and it's been a couple of months now and he's sleeping through the night. He's 3. Yep, it almost took us 3 years to get him to sleep through the night. OP, I feel your pain.
  • Thank you so much for all the feedback! It's kind of what I figured in that some children are naturally better sleepers than others. It's just so disheartening when you hear people talk about how their kids slept through the night at 10 weeks, 6 months, etc. We have started to put together her big girl room, but I'm not ready to move her there yet as I think she would probably just continue to get out of it like @molisar.  Fingers crossed when we have a 2nd, he/she will be a better sleeper!
