Breastfeeding

Weaning question

My dd turned one last month! Yaaay we made it a year!! We have been exclusively breastfeeding(along with solids at six months)and she has only had a handful of bottles along the way. We are down to nursing 2xday and I'm ready to start the weaning process. My Dh and I are going on a vacay in June and I would love to have her completely weaned by then. My problem is.....dd has been getting up around 5:30-6 am to nurse and then goes back to sleep until about 7 which is great. Well the past few weeks she has been getting up earlier and earlier to nurse. Right now it's around 4 am. She will sit in her crib and scream and cry until I go in and nurse. I have never done any sleep training, I have always nursed on demand and I am unsure how to break her of this. I would not mind at all getting up around 6 for a sippy of milk and breakfast but I feel 4am is a little early for that. Anybody dealt with this before? Or have any idea on how to get her to stop waking to nurse? I'm not totally opposed to cry it out but she is pretty persistent and I feel like she would cry for hours. Going in her room and trying to soothe seems to make her more mad, and she doesn't take a pacifier. TIA!

Re: Weaning question

  • Can you try just giving her some cuddles instead of nursing? Will she take a paci? Can you give her her favorite toy to snuggle or something like that? Agree having Daddy go in there might help too.

  • Congrats on making it past 1 year!  Ditto PP's suggestion of having YH go in instead of you.  Your DD may not like it but she'll get used to it fast and should start putting herself back to sleep once she realizes she's not getting any milk.

  • My dd did this same thing around a year. She moved her wake up to nurse time from around 6 to around 4. This lasted about 2 weeks. Then she slowly started going later and later. As a matter of fact last week she was waking at 9 or after. Now over the weekend she moved it back to 5:30 or 6 again. She is 14 months. Now I am of no help on the weaning portion, but just wanted to let you know it might just be a stage she is going through waking earlier.
