39 weeks lower abdominal cramping

I'm 39 weeks and am experiencing some lower abdominal cramping. The first one was real bad and took my breath away then they've just kinda hung around but aren't nearly as strong, just uncomfortable. I'm a first time mom so I really don't know what this is or means. Help ? (:

You need to start timing them. Call your OB if you have any concerns.

It's just baby moving into position. Mine started at 38 and 5 and I've had them every day on and off since and I'm due tomorrow. My midwife said ignore it bc it's not a true contraction and you'll know when a real contraction comes on. Mine feel like really bad period cramps nice and low and they get my lower back too.

  • I felt the same thing last Thursday through Friday evening and then it stopped. I had the same thing happen again last night from about 9pm - 2am and then stopped...I still feel a dull cramping sensation and my lower back hurts as well. At my last app, my OB said these were good signs that body is progressing...

  • With my DD, that was how labor started.  This time I've had it on and off for days.  Try to ignore it unless it starts getting consistent or more painful and then time them.  It could be labor or it could be baby getting into position.

There's lots of posts on this. My ob said cramping is a good thing, means you're getting close. Time them, call your ob if they're 5 mins apart
  • I'm a little concerned myself I had an appointment today 39w3d and I got my 1st cervical check (2cm 50% effaced -1 station and engaged) woo! MW stripped the membrane and asked if I felt that contraction but it hardly felt like anything. Ack why is my body not cooperating, now I'm scared I'm going to be in labor and not know 100%.

This. It's a good sign. I had them the other day so bad I could barely sick. I think LO was headbutting me.

I have moderate period-like cramps after going for a walk, but its like one long continuous one for a few minutes and then it goes away, so I'm pretty sure it's not actually a contraction.  I'm hoping it's doing SOMEthing though.

  • Cramping like this off and on is totally normal.  I expect it several times a day...will only get worried if they get stronger and last over an hour.  I cramp different ways everyday...sometimes it is just lower back for an hour...sometimes it is lower abdominal contraction type cramps...sometimes I just get menstrual like cramps for an hour...anyways, they all go away so I never worry...just part of the process.
