What to eat for glucose test

My glucose test is tomorrow afternoon....I usually have it in the AM so am wondering any suggestions other than the obvious candy, donut, eyc on what not to eat. I am not trying to "trick the test" I just want to not eat something that will spike my sugar without realizing it.

Re: What to eat for glucose test

  • Protein! I would have some hard boiled eggs for breakfast. I would stay away from carbs and sugars.

  • Agree with others, my doctor said the best choice is eggs and a meat. Stay away from breads, pastas, etc. Also, avoid other high-carb breakfast choices like oatmeal, pancakes, grits, etc.

  • What do you think of dairy? I usually have a 2% mozzarella string cheese stick for snack and will probably do a fruit too since my test won't be till 3 as my OB appt is at 2 and I drink it then.

Exactly what others have said.  I'll stick to proteins before my glucose test.

  • Eat whatever you normally eat. If there is an issue with your diet, finding out now is better than finding out later.
Yeah, this.  It's not about beating the test.  It's about seeing if what you normally eat causes issues with the current condition of your body.  That's why GD can be controlled by food choices a lot of the time.  FWIW, I ate my flax seed enhanced oatmeal with a little milk added and a glass of OJ because that is my daily breakfast - I passed just fine.

Cheese is considered a protein so that should be safe. As for fruit, stick with fruits on the low glycemic index side of things, like a small apple, or some berries. And like PP stated, I wouldn't snack too close to your appointment time.

  • @funnibunni80‌ I feel your pain! I had mine yesterday thankfully i schedule mine at 8:15 so I was having lunch by 11:30. And had 10 hrs fasting
  • I have heard of a few labs actually asking you to fast for the 1 hour, thankfully I can go in whenever so I plan to do it in the morning.

Try to stick to protein like PPs said.

As I mentioned in my OP I am not trying to beat the test I just don't want to say snack on something right before the test I didn't realize may impact the test....for example my friend didn't know I guess and had spaghetti for lunch before her test and failed....she was fine but didn't know to avoid a carb load. They told me not to eat anything sugary for lunch (my test started around 2:30).  I asked if fruit would be ok, and they advised against it.  I had a bagel for breakfast and a tuna sandwich for lunch and passed with no problem.

  • I would avoid all carbs. I had two hard boiled eggs for breakfast and a salad with chicken for my test and I passed. I'd skip the fruit if you can.

  • I've heard protein or any non-sugar/carb heavy breakfast. My office told me to fast for 4 hours. which it's at 8 AM, so I'll be fasted for 12 or more. For J's test I remember it being early AM and I was fasting also. I wasn't told any diet suggestions either way that time

  • I had mine last week in the am, and just had scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast. I passed with flying colors- good luck to you!

  • I'm sitting in the waiting room now, waiting for my second draw. My OB said I did not have to fast, so I had 2 hard boiled eggs this morning and no one here seems to mind.

The stuff tastes like Tang but sweeter. Not terrible till the last gulp or two (I'm not into sugar/soda), and now I'm just contending with a little heartburn/reflux while I wait.

  • I had mine today was told I had to fast for 4 hours. I did mine first thing in the morning to avoid starving all day but I hear protein is good for breakfast before it.

The comments lead to more of a beating the test type of mentality rather just trying to eat better on the day of, not your OP which is why I said that.  I wasn't the only one who saw that.  Carb loading on any day is bad (unless you are say, running a marathon), especially if it effects your blood sugar enough to change the outcome of a test.  Eating for pregnancy is different than eating when not pregnant.

I stand by what I said - if what you eat before is a normal type of meal/snack for you and it causes you to fail the test, it's something to look at anyway because it's causing your blood sugar to fluctuate to levels they don't like to see.   The way your body reacts to food and your blood sugar levels change with pregnancy, that's what the test is about.  This is why changing how you eat is often how you control your sugar level.  If you eat differently before hand just to pass, you may still find yourself in a situation where you have blood sugar issues later on, which may lead to taking the test again or worse.

  • My test is at 9:00 AM. They said nothing about fasting. Any advice...should I eat or not?

  • I had mine yesterday. No one told me anything but I did fast and took the test at 9 am. As a warning, baby was active ALL day after that :)
  • Mine is this morning! It's an hour before my test and I haven't eaten breakfast yet, so I am just going to hold off on eating until after the test.

  • Mine was this morning and I was told not to fast. I had my usual oatmeal w/half a banana and one scrambled egg and passed "with flying colors." However, I'm apparently slightly anemic and am supposed to start taking iron supplements. :-(
