I mostly lurk, but I had twins at 34 weeks and I'm a NICU nurse myself. Thought that in honor of nurses week, I would get some feedback... What are characteristics of an awesome (or your favorite) NICU nurse?
The NICU nurses here are really helpful and knowledgeable. I feel like I could ask the same question twenty times and they would be more than willing to answer them. What is a good way to thank the nurses for their care? DS is still in the NICU.
We always appreciate food related items or a sweet note, which usually happens on discharge. A few families have had a bowl of candy in their room and that's always awesome! Thanks for asking, we love our families too!
I loved most of our nurses because they were patient with me when I didn't know what was going on and asked "stupid" questions. They explained everything, which was awesome because at the beginning, I didn't even know what I didn't know. They were always so friendly and warm when we met new ones.
There were two that I didn't care for and it was because they (both!) came into the room, didn't introduce themselves or explain anything. I had to figure out what questions to ask and it felt awkward and uncomfortable. We only had them a few times.
Our March for Babies is this weekend and the NICU we were at is having a nurses team walk...I'm so excited to see our favorite nurse!
Most of the nurses were fabulous! They were attentive, answered questions, made me feel like me being there was important, too, and I felt like they really cared about our daughter. I was so happy that these were the people taking care of my baby when I wasn't able to be there myself. I only had a problem with a couple of them (for being condescending, and for making comments about how little breast milk I was able to pump).
One of my favorites had an incredible memory for the smallest details of my life. She also would sit and talk to me for hours if she had the time (and I know she must have had to work extra to sit and talk with me because she was always willing). It was so nice and I didn't feel so lonely.
Our very favorite nurse was awesome - she made a card "from" DS for DH's birthday, she coordinated his bedding and outfits, she put little signs up to celebrate milestones - she was awesome. We became good friends and get to hang out with her sometimes. Love her!
