Apnea monitor memory chip corrupted

edited May 2014 in Preemies
After three weeks of being on an apnea monitor at home the medical supply company came out to replace a faulty data cord (we called bc it was causing false alarms) and take the memory chip so that it could be analyzed.

After two weeks of waiting for the report, the monitoring company tells me that the data chip was corrupt and they will not be able to produce a report as a result. They believe the corruption was related to the cord that was replaced. I am so emotional about this. It feels like we've suffered for three weeks with the strap around my babies chest and we are getting absolutely nothing out of it. I absolutely know there are worse things in life but I can't help but be upset.

I really want to make the parental decision to just simply take her off the monitor. She hasn't had any Brady episodes since coming home. It's been seven weeks since her last incident.

What would you do?

I have another concern in that I am going back to work next week. My husband will be taking four weeks of paternity leave. But then after that we are going to be forced to put her into a day care center. She cannot be on this monitor and be at a daycare.

  • I would do whatever makes you comfortable. Talk it over with your pediatrician and express your concerns. DS will be coming home with the monitor and for me it is a peace of mind, but since you have had her home for a few weeks you obviously seem to be comfortable with her progress.

  • We brought LO home on the monitor and after a couple false alarms when we could clearly see her breathing, we made the parental decisions to leave the monitor off of her while we were up with her during the day; we'd then put it on at night. Well, one night we forgot and we just kind of never put it back on. Pedi was supportive of our decisions and even said her training never included apnea monitors, just o2. We did use the monitor when we were weaning down from the o2 though. For what it's worth, I don't think our pedi ever took a report from the monitor.

That being said, do what makes you comfortable. DH and I both felt comfortable with our decision, but had either one of us not, we wouldn't have done.
  • Thanks guys. It was peace of mind at first but after having it on for a while it felt like...I don't know a barrier? A burden? But of course I don't want to be stupid. I was just getting excited because I thought we would get an end date from our pedi after the report. And I thought it would be this week or next.

I'm more calm about it now. Our pediatrician ordered a download of the last couple of weeks and we have an appointment with her next Monday. I'll talk to her about a game plan then if we don't get the report before then. Even though it wasn't recording data the alarms were working and I did really appreciate that.

Can they get any information off of it at all? I'd continue to use it so that the cardiologist (or whatever specialist you are seeing) can see a week or so worth of data, and then discuss discontinuing it. I totally get your your frustration, the monitor is a PITA, but I would not be comfortable making that decision if it was against doctors orders.
