Anxiety is a bitch

Sorry to be a downer but I'm just really struggling with anxiety as of late. I took DD to the library today (recent site of anxiety attacks) and had to leave after an hour. While waiting in line to pay for books and DVD's my heart started racing, and I thought I was going to puke and choke both at the same time. Anxiety can go DIAF.

Re: Anxiety is a bitch

  • *hugs* I'm dealing with really bad anxiety right now and am finally looking into seeing a professional about it. I have a zumba class tonight and just thinking about going makes my heart race and my chest hurt. I'm usually okay once I get where I'm going, but getting there is so fucking hard. I'm sorry you're having anxiety attacks, too.

  • Suffering right along with you. I recently took on a managerial job and it's ramping up my anxiety big time. I am starting to feel panicky anytime I have to talk in front of the group. Any hint of confrontation throws me into full blown panic mode. I take Remeron to help me sleep, but I think I need something else to help with these panic attacks. My job requires confidence and these panic attacks are throwing me off my game. I am considering Propranolol.

Girl I'm right there with you. It's awful. But it helps to have coping techniques and people to talk to

I've been seeing a therapist recently on suggestion from my regular doctor - for energy and anxiety. She's a social worker, not a doctor, who specializes in anxiety and uses mindfulness (which is way less hippy voodoo than it sounds).

Here's a bit on NPR about it: https://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/01/07/260470831/mindfulness-meditation-can-help-relieve-anxiety-and-depression

    And here's a book she suggested I read: https://www.amazon.com/Just-One-Thing-Developing-Practice/dp/1608820319/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1399381687&sr=8-3&keywords=buddha+brain

It's all neurologically-based, empirically backed stuff and I swear I'm a different person right now. Let me know if you have any questions.

Anxiety sucks so bad and I'm so sorry you're dealing with it. My heart races too when I get anxious and that makes me even more anxious.

Have you considered talking to anyone about how you're feeling? Even if you aren't interested in meds, they can provide other resources that might help.

  • I struggle with anxiety as well. I've found poor sleep and dehydration really do trigger it so trying to manage that when possible help. Also taking a good multivitamin, getting adequate exercise, and a healthy diet go a long way. When I feel an attack coming on, putting my head between my legs, taking slow deep breaths and sniffing lavender essential oil/putting some on my temples helps prevent a panic attack 9 times out of 10.

  • Love tits=hugs sorry for everyone struggling with anxiety. It is tough. I have been doing really well lately but money stress, the job hunt going nowhere, and a trip coming up have it all building up again.

Panic attacks are awful. I am sorry you are experiencing them.

  • I am reading this thread and have come back. Just busy today, didn't have time to check TB until now. Thank you so much loves! I am on medication (high dose of Prozac, low dose of Zyprexa and Klonopin for sleep) and seeing someone weekly but it doesn't seem to be helping any. I never had a problem like this before and over the past year it has intensified and gotten worse. I'm trying to face the problem head-on and like some of you said, it is definitely biochemical and seems beyond my control. Again, thank you all for your repsonses and understanding. I want to nip this in the bud before it gets worse (which I don't think is possible)...
  • Another panic attack sufferer here. Do you take benzos for the attacks themselves? That was the only thing that ever helped me get out of a bad cycle of panic attacks (where worrying about having a panic attack became its own trigger). I took my dose of ativan as soon as i felt the anxiety rising or even before then if I knew I was heading into a situation that would likely trigger one (grocery shopping or riding the subway for instance). Once I stopped having the attacks so often, I stopped fearing them as much and things would get better. Of course, it's not a great plan of action if you're prone to addiction, but I thought I'd offer my advice on what helps me. Panic sucks!

  • @poebride- yes, I do take benzos (Klonopin) for the attacks but try not to take them unless absolutely necessary.

in my experience, (and maybe you have already tried this) but ativan works WONDERS compared to klonopin for attacks. just throwing my two cents in. feel better!!
  • Thank you @thisplaceisstupid! I haven't tried that but I just wanted to say its nice to have you back on TB :)

Careful with the benzos. They work on the same receptors as alcohol and can actually cause rebound anxiety and make it worse. Benzo use is a bit controversial. The Psychiatrists I work with rarely prescribe them and prefer to use Gabapentin and Hydroxyzine. Sometimes Clonidine and Beta Blockers can be helpful in the physical symptoms of anxiety (racing heart, palpitations etc). My plan for tackling anxiety is exercise every am, avoid alcohol and caffeine, try Magnesium supplements and chamomile and see a therapist for CBT. In the moment of an anxiety attack, I try to bring my focus outward vs inward to distract myself. Exposure therapy helps too, starting with exposing yourself to the anxiety triggers in a controlled environment. Good luck!

  • I also understand the feeling!  It is awful!  I'm doing much better now, but suffered severe PPD/PPA.  I deal with occasional anxiety now too.  I used Klonopin for a while, 2 mgs every night for sleep.  It worked wonders for me.  I liked it better than Ativan, personally.  Everybody handles meds differently and prefer different things.

As far as benzos, yes you have to be careful, but if you need them, take them.  Use them as directed and never more than you are suppose to take.  I am totally off my Klonopin now, after using it for almost 2 years straight.  I RARELY use it now and weaned off pretty easily.  I could not sleep or function without it and I wasn't going to suffer.  So I took it and then got off when I was ready.  Don't let benzons scare you, please.

    Good luck and hugs!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

i agree with being careful on the benzos. i had to go through withdrawal from klonopin and it was awful. but as long as you aren't relying on them everyday, they can be wonderful when needed.
