Anyone else?

Okay I am bottle feeding and at her 2 week check up I noticed a lot of noise and flem sound in the back of her throat after eating so I switched her formula to sensitive, it seemed to solve the problem. Shortly after she seemed like she was still hungry after bottles and she was eating 3.5 oz at a time so I stared to add a very small amount of rice cereal in her bottles, which then again seemed to help, but a couple days ago it's like shit hit the fan and all of a sudden she's getting terrible gas pains.. Massive, where she is crying and crying and I feel so terrible for her I don't know what changed? So I stopped the cereal all together to make sure she didn't have a rice allergy and all seemed okay then the past two days have been so sad after every time she eats she burps well and is constantly farting.. Then begins the crying like she either over ate or is getting a stomach ache? Is anyone else going through this? I had my husband grab some similac total comfort to see if that would help? I feel like she's almost not eating like she normally would because she is anticipating pain? My son who is now 5 had major issues with formula and ended up on similac alimentum due to soy and lactos allergies. Would love to know any tips or tricks as to what will help sooth her rough times.. We are headed to the pedi tomorrow am to get everything checked out!

  • It's not solid, it's mixed in with the formula in the bottles... It's less than a half of a tea spoon and it's fairly normal here?
  • Awe. Poor thing. Definitely talk to her pedi tomorrow. Switching around her formula and adding the cereal is not a very good idea when they are this little. Their digestive systems are very sensitive and can react to changes to their diets very easily. Talk over with her doctor what you have tried and I am sure they can come up with a solution. In the meantime you can try gripe water or doing the bicycle kicks/baby crunches to try and expel a little bit of gas and make her feel better. Hope everything works out for you and little one!

  • Yeah, I have always heard no cereal this early.

Having it served in a bowl or in a bottle doesn't change anything to the fact that it's rice, a solid food, and that solids shouldn't be introduced until much later (6 months, but the minimum is 4 months on a pedi's recommendation). Did your doctor recommend the cereal or you just decided to do that on your own?

  • We have been using gripe water, and sometimes the all natural gas drops, the only thing she seems to like is walking around.
  • Yes pedi decided it was prob best to switch to sensitive formula at 2 week check up I called at 4 weeks and he said if she's waking up every 2 hours to eat 3.5 oz she may need a small amount in her bottle. Which I don't find strange at all concidering I did it with my son also, and everyone I know also has done it too, like I said it's not a uncommon thing here and it's not like I'm adding a massive amount in her bottle it was less than a half of a teaspoon.

Babies who have reflux get cereal in formula a very small amount this is both from our nicu team and our pedi. It's just enough to thicken the fluid to help stay down. It just depends on the issues and what not. Good luck momma!
