Does Lanolin really work?

I don't understand how lanolin is really going tohelp the pain.  We have had terrible BF troubles from the start and theday after Xmas my little gu dropped the nipple shield-- yayayayayaya!

But now my nipples are in so much pain.  It's at its worst right when he latchs on. On the Right side it get's better towards the end of the feeding (usually) but on the left side it's bad thorughout the feeding- really bad, liek take my breath away.  My areolas are usually more of a brown color but right now they are infamed red looking- not all the way to the border but a ring around the nipple and the nipple is red and sore looking.  They aren't bleeding or cracked.  I've been putting the lanolin on there, letting them air dry with milk on them and wearing the little nipple domes to protect them from my shirt.  Any ideas??

Re: Does Lanolin really work?

  • I found the lanolin helps for raw/abraded?nipples but wasn't a miracle cure for us. ?We started out w/ a nipple shield due to latch problems, I got fed up with that and decided to EP, that lasted about 3wks b/c it ended up being more work and I went back to the shield, then I FINALLY got him to latch w/o it and got Titty Twisters! ?He pinched me so hard it made me cry every time he'd nurse. ?It wasn't long before we were back to the shield for my poor boobs' protection. Sad?

Anyway, I liked the Medela lanolin way better than Lansinoh - the Lansinoh is just too thick for me and hurt to spread around. ?The Medela one spreads very easily and has an oilier consistency.?

  • The lanolin will help.... I also used the medela.

It will help with the irritation and also leaves a barrier on your skin so that your clothes won't irritate your nipples.  When I was new to bf, my nips were quite irritated and raw and if I didn't have lanolin on, my bra would stick to them.  Also, have you tried the gel soothing pads?

  • I also use the Medela lanolin...it helps a ton!

The way you describe your pain...could you possibly have thrush?  I think I have it and am getting the same things you are, but have never used a nipple shield.  I'm just wondering if that could be the case for you.

  • I can't use lanolin because it is made from wool and I am allergic to wool.

Are you fair skinned? ?I had the same experience as you for a couple of months and nothing was wrong (no thrush, good latch, etc.). ?I just have sen skin. ?My doctor prescribed me a cream called APNO (All Purpose Nipple Cream) that really helped.?

GL and congrats on dropping the nipple shield!?

  • Sore nipples and red ring around nipple is characteristic Thrush....get help before it moves to your milk ducts and hurts really bad and is very hard to get rid of.  I was also told by my LC that lanolin helps breed thrush and traps yeast and moisture in the nipple.

  • It didn't take away the pain,  tt just helped moisturize them to prevent cracking/bleeding....at least that's what it did for me.  My nipples were still sore from weeks 2 - 4.  GL!
  • I would try the APNO (all purpose nipple ointment).  I had a friend who used it.  Google it and then call your ob to prescribe it to your pharmacy.  GL!
