Cloth Diapering

Hi Ladies

Hubby and I are looking into cloth diapering, we didn't with our first who is now 4. I am looking for any input, suggestions or information on cloth. I am pretty overwhelmed by the amount of choices out there! We have been looking at targets brand of cloth because we have heard really good things. Anyone have any experience with these?

TIA!!

Re: Cloth Diapering

  • Just found the cloth diapering board, somehow I missed it the first time I looked!

Yes, Charlie Bananas is the brand I'm talking about!

    Thanks!

I really like our Charlie Banana, but I don't think they are a favorite with a lot of the cloth diaper buffs. I don't know why. It is overwhelming at first, and my advice is to not buy too many of one type at first bc some diapers work better on certain babies better.

We started with the Sized Charlie Bananas when DS was a newborn and those lasted him to 6 or 7 months. Then we switched to the one sized. They have all held up well and I like that you can double stuff them. Now that DS is older I use disposables at bedtime bc the cloth diapers do leak at night.

We also had Flips that I didn't care for and some all in one bum genius diapers that were just ok.

I originally bought the Charlie Bananas on Zilily for a great deal and I have found Charlie Bananas on super clearance at target. I recommend keeping an eye out for a deal since you are still a few months away.

We cloth diaper ds and plan to do the same with this one. I spent soooo much time researching this and found the best system for us was the Gdiaper pant with GMD prefolds. I liked that the pants are reusable (opposed to bumgenious or other pocket diaper) so you don't need to purchase as many not to mention super cute! I also love you can use a biodegradable insert in place of the cloth, for travel or the beach, etc. The GMD are natural fiber so they're safe against baby's skin and the most absorbent option and are conveniently super inexpensive. We have never had a leak issue or more importantly a blow out.
  • We CD'd with DS2 and will with this one. For the long haul I don't care for CB. BumGenius is great but DS2 was too sensitive to microseude which they use. Everyone will be different but I love Kawaii for a pocket diaper...cheap and holds up well. I use many other brands too....rumparooz, thirsties, best bottoms, grovia are my biggest stash.
    Praying this little one sticks!

  • First off I LOVE hearing people that choose cloth diapers... it's so much better for the baby's skin and for the environment!! So YAY!!!

    I opted for a service.
This way you don't have to deal with washing them and it still turns out cheaper than disposable.
If you are in NYC I highly recommend DiaperKind!!

Just to follow up on this, I did look into a diaper service, and the one that was available in my area only used prefolds, and I wasn't interested in them.  I work full time and was nervous about the extra laundry loads/work diapers would involve.  But I have been surprised to find that it's not that bad.  I built up a good stash, and now that DS is older, I only have to do one load a week.  When he was younger, I did do two, sometimes three loads.  I have never found it to be a big deal (and believe me, I hate housework, and didn't think I would feel this way).

That said, if I lived in NYC (where I did live for 16 years) or if I lived in an apartment building or house where I didn't have my own washer/dryer and I was relying on building-shared facilities (or laundrymats), I would definitely go with a service.
