Losing Too Much Weight?

I started out at 157 (I'm 5'8") before I was pregnant. I lost all my pregnancy weight (24 pounds) a week after my daughter was born. She's two weeks today, and I've continued losing weight. I'm now 153.5, so that means I've lost 3.5 in a week. I was wondering if it could really be because of breastfeeding. I also haven't been overeating.

The reason I'm worried (and I've posted about this here before) is because I have a tender/sore spot on my belly (only when pressure is applied). And I've always heard bad things about "rapid weight loss/gain" when there's something not right going on with the body.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this kind of weight loss, whether with previous pregnancies or now? And would you be concerned?

Re: Losing Too Much Weight?

  • Ime rapid weight loss post partum is very normal. A lot of it is fluid and all that extra blood, plus the fst your body stockpiled for bf. I wouldn't worry too much, but I would make an effort to eat plenty of calories so bf isn't affected. That would be my biggest concern.

  • Did you call your dr about the tenderness in your abdomen? BFing burns a lot of calories - more than PG - so if you are not eating enough you will continue to drop weight. But it can affect your supply so you don't want to lose too quickly. The first week I was home I noticed I was not eating enough and I would get really shaky. Now I just make sure I am eating enough to compensate for how much I'm burning.

So I would not automatically assume something is wrong, but I would call your dr about the tenderness in your abdomen.

  • @*sparky* Yes, they said it could be any number of things but didn't seemed too concerned about it unless it got worse. It's actually gotten a little better since I last spoke with them, so I haven't mentioned it again.

I have noticed that I'm never full. I've just continued eating the same amount I was used to eating. Maybe I do need to up my intake of calories...

  • I lost all of my pregnancy weight in the first few days as well (22 lbs). I have since gained about three pounds back and supply does seem to be better.
  • With my first I lost tons of weight very quickly. As PP say, as long as you are eating well I wouldn't worry.

I lost about 25 pounds in the first two weeks.  Unfortunately I gained 50 while I was pregnant, so I still have a ways to go :-)

  • I would def recommend eating more. I lost all my pregnancy weight and then some (25 lbs) within 2 weeks and had to force myself eat more. (Don't get me wrong I love eating I'm just lazy). I got a lot of one hand snacks like poptarts, cereal bars, goldfish, etc and I noticed my supply was better LO seemed to be getting more milk and was happier and I was maintaining the same weight. No advice for the tenderness but I hope you feel better!
  • @SLSchuerg - Wasn't it you who posted about your belly button pain a few days ago? I'm pretty sure I commented that I have an umbilical hernia, which is causing quite a bit of pain at my belly button. I'm still hoping you get some answers soon.

As far as the weight loss, I also lost a lot of weight quickly - I was wearing 14/16 pants pre-pregnancy (gained 27 lbs. during pregnancy), and now I'm wearing 10/12. Sure, I'm not skinny, but smaller than I was when we conceived. I have almost no appetite, and food just doesn't taste good to me now - but my milk production is still super active. As long as I'm staying hydrated and keeping my calories up (supplementing with Ensure and Carnation powders in milk between meals), our doctor said that is sufficient. I've never had trouble with my appetite, but for some reason I'm just not wanting food at all. I'm basically eating just for the sake of eating, but I'm not enjoying any foods. Basically, all I want to eat is fresh fruit and drink water with real fruit juice in it.

  • @chichi589 I think that's what I'm going to have to start doing - forcing myself to eat more. I have today, but I don't think it's been too much. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain that. :)

@WifeofaComposer Yep, that was me! And I've experienced the same thing. My MIL has commented how I look smaller in other areas besides my stomach. I haven't pulled out my pre-pregnancy clothes yet, but I'm sure they'd be a little looser once I do try them on. Sorry you've lost your appetite, but I'm glad it's not causing any issues for you or baby.

  • I'm similar to @WifeofaComposer‌. I'm 11 days pp and below my pre-preg weight. The doctor expected this, though, because I only gained baby weight this pregnancy (14 pounds, and Josie was 7/2) which she was happy about because I was overweight to begin with and didn't need to gain extra. I'm eating all the fruits and juices, too, and don't feel like I'm eating excessively, just normally. I'm still getting whipped cream on my coffees, though, and letting myself have more extras than I did pre-preg. Food tastes REALLY FREAKING GOOD to me though, so I'm surprised I'm not eating more and was concerned about my weight loss being too fast, too. The ladies on here told me not to worry unless my breast milk was affected, though, so I'm not too bothered anymore.
