Breastfeeding

trying to weigh pros and cons, advice please!

My little one will be 8 weeks old Monday. I breastfed for the first 2 weeks, but then I developed PPD. due to being on Prozac, since that's the one that works (I've had PPD before), they told me it could pass to his milk. Hearing that, I decided to stop breastfeeding. Having done a little more research, it appears to be a very small amount he could *possibly* get. I feel like the benefits would way outweigh the possible effects if I breastfeed. Wondering if anybody has EBF on Prozac before, or any other anti depressant that could pass into milk. If so, how did the baby respond. I'm on 20mg Prozac a day. Also wanting tips for relactating, if I do decide to try again. I would hate for him to miss out on breast milk, but there's no way I can wean off the Prozac without very negative effects on me. I hate giving him formula, and he has issues with gas and reflux. I feel like nursing could help his belly out a little bit!

Re: trying to weigh pros and cons, advice please!

  • I was in a similar position last week when I was battling severe insomnia and wanted to go on sleep meds. When I talked to my MW about whether I'd have to quit in order to be able to go on sleep meds she said absolutely not. As PP mentioned, the benefits of continuing to feed my DD breastmilk far outweigh the slight  risk that some of the meds be transferred into the milk. And if it means a happier (more sane) mama who is getting sleep that will benefit my DD as well for the long-term. I don't know what the safety level of Prozac is, but since my experience last week I'm learning that although some meds are safer than others (L1) other meds at L2 or even L3 aren't necessarily harmful--it's just that small amounts of the meds are found in the milk and it's usually not well understood what harm (if any) it poses on infants in the long term due to loss of follow-up and/or confounders. I recommend contacting LLL or an LC as they will have Dr. Hale's book to reference. They can help you decide what is the best choice for you and LO.
