Sugar Intake

Wondering how you ladies are handling sugar intake. I've got a big sweet tooth and avoided candy and sweets all of first tri (mostly because it made me feel awful). I've found that I'm slowly easing back into sugary products. Nothing crazy, but a small Airhead here or some skittles there. I don't feel too guilty about it since I don't drink sugary drinks (coffee) regularly. BUT a friend yesterday saw me eating a candy and made a comment about my baby being "super hyper when she comes out". I know my friend was mostly joking, but it stuck with me.

So, what are you ladies doing, if anything, to watch/curb your sugar intake?

I'm not really watching it more than I normally do. I eat pretty healthy in general so I'm not worried about the occasional treat.

  • I honestly haven't been trying to cut back at all.  I have donuts on a regular basis and I need dessert after lunch and dinner.  I do need to start working on it because it's turning into a habit.  Baby is just craving carb loaded desserts all the time!  When DH is around, he does try to steer me towards fruit or other snacks instead of cookies.

  • I haven't been super worried about it because I go in cycles. Some days I only want fruit and veggies, some days I only want protein, some are all carbs, and yesterday, well all I wanted was a steak sandwich and then a lot of sugar. Today is shaping up to be a fruit and veggie day...so that should help even out yesterday's sugar fest.

  • I have always had a sweet tooth but tried to limit it in order to maintain a somewhat healthy diet. Well that's flown out the window now. And I passed my  glucose tolerance test, so I figure I'm okay. I am trying to cut back some now that I'm seeing the scale creep up, though.

  • I actually haven't been watching my sugar intake because apparently my blood sugar level has a tendency to get low, which may be causing my light-headedness and dizziness. So....I consider it a free pass to keep candy on me at all times!

  • I'm trying to be good but seriously ALL I want is sugar. I curb my intake by trying not to buy it at the store. I usually won't go out and make a special run for it.

Although god help me if I'm buying something else at Target, I've done well and then get to the checkout line with all its chocolates... I try hard to resist, but my willpower is down compared to pre-preg.

I am watching mine some, but I try to do this. Now that it's getting closer to summer I have been loading up on fruits like bananas, cantaloupe, watermelon, berries, etc. I also try to stick to dark chocolate when I get a chocolate hankering. I fix myself a little plate with fruit, dark chocolate, and almonds. Of course, I save the chocolate for last and enjoy it the most, but that usually satisfies me.

  • I've also had a sweet tooth, but rather than trying to restrict it, I've been focusing on filling it with specific treats- berries and dark chocolate, as @runningj and others have mentioned.  Both definitely satisfy the cravings! I've been making a lot of smoothies, too- I usually mix yogurt, frozen berries, a banana and some rice milk. It's sweet but not too sweet, generally hits the spot.

  • I definitely have a sugar problem right now, and my trip to Target last weekend was a terrible idea.  I have a little "hiding" place in the kitchen that I keep junk food, and DH keeps looking in it and asking when I bought such and such junk food since it has grown.  I have quite the stock pile right now of chocolate, and am eating 4 to 5 pieces each night (minnie size pieces).

  • I try to watch it simply because I'm already having to eat more than my body is used to. Plus, this baby is super picky. She likes carbs and protein but whenever I eat lots of sugar I end up sick.

I've got an awful sweet tooth as well. I try to keep it under 40g for the day, total, if it's something like yogurt or ice cream or chocolate that I'm eating. I also have to watch my breakfasts because I love to eat apple cinnamon oatmeal and that eats up a good 20g of the sugar I allow myself. With fruits, I don't really keep track.

I normally don't have much of a sweet tooth and didn't in the first trimester, but in the second, I have really been craving sweets! I usually have something a little sweet twice a day, and I'm not too worried about it.

  • I am watching it in the morning only for now.  My OB has a theory that my giant bowl of cereal for breakfast may be contributing to my mid-morning nausea/vomiting.  Milk & even healthy cereal have pretty high sugar contents, she thinks it might be too much for my body to process after basically going 12 hours (overnight) without eating anything.  We talked about it on Friday & with the change to a higher protein breakfast so far so good!

I had basically eliminated all refined sugar long before getting pregnant. That all went out the window with morning sickness. I've had ridiculous cravings for chocolate and ice cream. ETA: I'm chowing on some Ben and Jerry's right now :@)
  • I need to curb my sugar intake
I had apple pie for breakfast and now I feel like crap.

After having GD with my first, I do this even when not pregnant. I always have protein with breakfast, and I never do cereal anymore. Glad you are feeling better after making the switch!

  • I eat a lot of fruit. It has a high sugar count but at least it's not from junk food. Luckily I've had an ad version to sweets (junk food) this time around but I've noticed that once I do eat an occasional ice cream then all the bad cravings just follow. It's addictive. Just stick to fruit it's more satisfying and healthier.

I ate a 1/2 lb of chocolates yesterday... Bought them for myself for Mother's Day... I don't know what happened :/
  • I have a horrible sweet tooth now that I never had before. I am trying not to give in every time, but it's hard. I typically feel terrible after I eat a lot of sugar or carbs, too. I take my 3 hour glucose on Tuesday, so we'll see if I truly do have a problem processing it.

  • Not really.  I always make sure I fill up on good food first, but beyond that, I'm not about to limit the sugar intake. Sugar was more of a craving with the first two pregnancies, but it is nice when I realize that I can have something that sounds good because I'm not as worried about calorie intake right now.  I always gain what is well within the suggested range, so I'm not worried.
