She's Just a FTM

My doctor has been telling me for weeks to check into the ER/L&D as soon as I notice decreased fetal movement (10 movements in 1 hour is her rule). My baby boy is normally very active but today has been slow and stubborn. It was difficult to get to 10 movements with extreme stimulation in a matter of 52 minutes, but we did it. But leading up to bedtime, when he is normally break-dancing, he was completely still. Nothing I did was making him move. So I quickly made my way to the ER and as soon as they strapped me up, he started moving! And I got to hear that sweet sign of life thumping away inside of me - was immediately brought to tears. All these nurses were looking at me like "Aww, how precious. This is her first." Well, yes it is. And I am wearing my FTM badge with pride because I want to be a mom. And if that means hauling my ass to the ER every time I think something is wrong, I will do so without hesitation. Life is too fragile.

  • I had the same thing happen at 33 weeks, and I am a STM! As soon as they hooked the monitor up, she started moving like crazy. Glad your LO is ok!

Totally get this. I told my Ob a couple appointments ago that I was concerned I never feel this baby move much. (DD was a constant kicker, this one never moves, I certainly don't feel 10 movements per hour ever). But of course as soon as I said that and got hooked up to the monitor the little one wouldn't stop kicking. I'm glad you went in, definitely better safe than sorry.

That happened with my first too. We were an hour away from home visiting my parents and I couldn't get him to move at all, with water, juice, rest, poking, or anything. Called my OB and she sent me to L&D. No movement the entire drive back or walk up to the room. As SOON as they hooked up the monitors, he started kicking up a storm. The nurse put her hand on my arm and spoke really slowly, as though I was daft-witted: "You know he's moving, right?"

    Yes. NOW he was moving...

It's always better to get checked! I'm glad you went in.

  • I hope they were like "aw, how sweet, a concerned first time mom," and not like "aw man, another noob first timer."  Pregnancy can be scary.  Glad everything is ok.
  • I don't blame you for being worried, especially lately. Glad all is well with your LO.

  • The nurse kept telling me, "When you need him to move, try drinking ice cold water, lay down on your left side and jiggle him." After already explaining to her that I did that PLUS some, and nothing happened. I don't think she believed me, but oh well. He's been moving nonstop all day today - he certainly knows how to work me into a frenzy! Thank you all for the support.

  • I'd of done the same thing, I don't think it's a FTM thing, I think it's just a mom thing. Glad all was well, screw the nurses, better to be safe!
