mp question (don't worry, not gross!)

Stm here... I feel silly for asking this! Where exactly does your mucus plug sit? I guess I imagined it was right at your cervix opening to block stuff out. But I'm dilated 2.5cm now and I guess I also figured it would start coming out with dilation. I never noticed it with my first though... I know it can regenerate and all that, but where is it up there? Haha

Re: mp question (don't worry, not gross!)

  • I had started dilating by my 34 week appt, so I've been dilating for about 3 weeks now... just wondering where it is or maybe it's coming out little by little... no clue

  • That's a good question, I never actually thought about this before! My understanding is that the MP does block the opening of the cervix, to prevent bacteria from getting through. But the cervix itself is closed until it starts to dilate, right? So the MP probably isn't directly in there. Maybe it surrounds or coats the opening? If it can regenerate, then maybe our bodies just produce more of it as we dilate?

I have not looked any of that up, just spitballin in the wind.

  • Yeah I didn't want to Google it... didn't want to risk the pictures lol

  • I had been curious about this too. I was 3-4 cm dilated at 36w6d and lost my MP the following 2 days and I was wondering the same thing.

  • Ok I googled it. We were right in thinking it's at the opening. So it's probably either really sticky and lets go when it feels like, or we have lost them without really realizing it

  • Is the plug *always* tinged with blood? Had a passing of something significant this morning, but it wasn't pink, brown, or red.

My MW worded it as it MAY have blood in it. So far mine hasn't. Just thick and green, like what you would blow out of your nose when you have a bad cold (*shudders*).

My guess would be (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the blood would be a sign things are closer? No? Yes? I'm a newb so I have no idea.

  • Oh :( I guess it was just wishful thinking!
  • Yeah I'm pretty sure that not everyone sees blood. Ok another question... does it ALWAYS come out before labor? Or can it come out during? Maybe that's why I didn't notice it last time...? Or I still think it was probably just in several small pieces...

  • I'm pretty sure it can come out during but..... I'm not sure about that. I know a lot of people never see it so it has to right?

  • I've had small amounts of discharge the past few weeks. It resembles regular discharge, no evidence of blood in it, very small amounts and it appears irregularly. Nothing that has been in a more solid form. I know I'm 1cm, so I'm sure it's possible this is part of my mc, but I'm not positive.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.

I didn't lose it with my first 2 pregnancies (or I didn't notice), but with this one I lost it around 37 weeks. Was induced at 39 weeks.

  • I only noticed a few tiny bits with DD1, so it either came out in tiny pieces or it came out during labor. With DD2, it came out in 2 or 3 giant nasty pieces. Lost my MP Friday and Saturday, had the baby on Sunday, so you never know! ;)

  • Im 2 cm and I haven't noticed anything yet- but it could have come out during one of my 5 nightly bathroom trips when I'm in zoombie mood and don't pay attention to the toilet or paper...
  • Aaaaand I just lost my MP, funny enough. So I'm going to say that it just comes loose eventually, even if you've already dilated a few centimeters. Seriously, ALL signs point to this baby coming in the next few days. I guess we'll see, because obviously we all know that the signs can mean nothing! But this is so different from my first pregnancy too

I lost what seemed to be a huge chunk, if not all of it, on Saturday. No signs of baby. I think it's different for everyone!
  • I just caught the tail end of mine going down the drain in the shower (about a week ago). I was like eww gross and then oh that's what that looks like...

  • I lost a little bit at 36 weeks and it wasn't blood tinged and I haven't noticed any more since
