Late Term and Child Loss

Signing cards

Do you include your angel when you sign cards from your family? During my pregnancy we signed things from us and baby last name until we decided on a name. Then we listed Ben right after dd. My mom's birthday was a week after We lost Ben and I still signed it from the four of us. Is that normal/ healthy?

Re: Signing cards

  • I think that is perfectly fine, there is nothing wrong with including Ben he is your baby.

I have struggled with this too.  I haven't signed Juliana's name, but it has bothered me not to do so.  I love the ideas of a little symbol.  Thank you all!

@stefuge I love that idea.  I struggled with this for a long time and my H thinks it's not appropriate to sign Ellie's name, but I think I'll coopt your idea and make a little picture for her.

I don't think it's bad to sign your angel's name.  I haven't had this come up yet, but I like the idea that PPs had about adding a heart or something else to symbolize your baby.

.....siggy..... My husband came up with a sweet way to include Lucas. He puts a halo over the "L" in love at the end of the card. It's a subtle way for us to include him and it feels right for us. I know one mom who draws a small butterfly for her daughter. I don't think there is anything wrong with signing his name though! Do what's right for you!

This is exactly what I do too!  Some people know the significance and some don't, but most importantly I do.

  • I sign Mary's name for our family but random people or not so close friends I usually don't or I'll just sign "the 'last name's" then I don't feel like I'm not including her.
  • We work in a ministry that we send people a monthly letter to know what we are doing and how they can pray. The letter is called Following the Footsteps (and has been for a long time) and has a little 1" square-ish picture of footprints on the beach in one of the top corners. My dear, sweet, creative husband scanned our son's footprints and had a friend format it. Now in that corner is a little square with our son's footprints. We haven't sent a letter yet since it has been changed. But I love it. (Especially because one of my sweet memories of my boy is his huge feet. His newborn size sock wouldn't stay on his feet because they were so big, so I took him home with no socks! A blanket, but no socks.) I'm curious to see if anyone will realize and ask or comment about the footprints.

I love it! When we were looking at Mass cards for Ben's service everything seemed so formal. My dad has some graphic design experience so we asked him to put Ben's footprints on the card with the quote, "No footprint is too small to leave an imprint on the world". My sil actually found the quote first. We love it.

  • As others have said, I think you should do whatever you're comfortable with.  I've never signed their names, but I do put "xxo" (kisses and hugs) on cards the xx for Leah and Rachel and the o for Gabe (and I put them in that order - "xxo" not "xox" because that's their birth order.  I don't know if anyone has recognized or realize that I do it, but that's OK - I mostly do it for me.)

I haven't signed Devon's name to anything, but I never thought of a symbol. Hm. I love that idea!

What is healthy and normal is whatever feels right to you.  I didn't end up doing it but I have a butterfly stamp I was going to use to sign our christmas cards last year because Kayla's room was going to be decorated in butterflies.  We ended up ordering photo cards and just signed the ____ family but you could do something like that if there is a symbol that reminds you of your angel.

This, too!  I find that if I sign something just as a family I feel "better" ... not sure why exactly.

  • I always have, and I always will.  But I do know parents who do not do this, which is also perfectly fine.  Whatever is more comfortable for you is what matters.
