Oh wow. I watched a new cooking show (Southern at Heart) on the FN, and she make blackberry margaritas with sage infused simple syrup. OMG yummy. I so want to try that this weekend.
D's school is having a Cinco de Mayo celebration with a pot luck style spread. It will be fun to get together with the other families, but pot lucks where you don't know everyone that's bringing food scare me. Is that snotty? I think it stems from my dairy free days. I just don't trust what's in the food.
We are bringing hamburger meat for build your own nachos and gum drops for making your own sombero cookies.
@CLLDLL I'm with you. I don't trust a potluck. I don't know what your house and your kitchen look like. How do I know you don't let your precious kitties help you cook? Blech.
Today is also MH's bday, so we are going out to dinner tonight. No margaritas for me... soon my precious beergarita, soon.

what?! potlucks are the best! so much good food that I didn't have to prepare or clean up after. plus you can always get away with eating at least 4 desserts at a pot luck because it would really just be rude not to sample everything

LLOL @secretagentkate That used to be my thinking until the whole MPI thing. Also if you stumbled across something you didn't like it's easier to get rid of it without hurting anyone's feelings than if you're a guest where one person does the cooking.
Our family reunion is always potluck, so I try to hover by the table and mentally note who brings what. I kind of have a general idea of the folks whose kitchens might be too cat-friendly for my taste, so I steer clear of those dishes. Also, if in doubt, I just try to bring a ton of dishes that I like and eat all my own food. It is a pain, but food poisoning just sucks.
I don't worry about the cleaniness of people's kitchens at a potluck. Some restaurant kitchens are pretty nasty, too. I couldn't eat All The Food if I had to prepare everything myself, haha. I'm usually not a big fan of potlucks, though. The fare is generally pretty mediocre.
The worst is when someone is like "Oh, you HAVE to try this dish. It's phenomenal." So you take a whole bunch and it's awful. Then you have to sneak off the garbage can and hope no one notices that giant pile of food you just slipped in. LOL.
I totally forgot today was Cinco de Mayo, so I didn't plan anything. But then DH texted and said he can get out of work early today. So now we're planning a Mexican feast for dinner. Chicken enchiladas with some guajillo salsa I happened to make yesterday, steak fajitas with salsa verde and refried beans. And homemade tortillas for all. Yum! And maybe some cerveza after all that cooking
It was good! It was a lot of fun, and MH hired someone to help out so I didn't have to do a thing. I still spent way too much time on my feet milling around and chatting, but I was really good about drinking my water. We had a great time, and killed all 275 lbs of crawfish. I was really upset about the bakery-bought cake, but MH refused to allow me to bake.

@mapleme I was just talking about your poutine parties at our party this weekend. Everyone agreed I should fly up for the next one. Seems rational, right?

Since I'm preggers no yummy margarita for me though I was kinda hoping to have this baby today bc it'd be fun for him when he gets older...although I don't think that's gonna happen
Whoever mentioned guacamole that's all I want now...lol
So this Cinco de Mayo thing...people really do stuff for it? I don't think I ever even heard of it until I was in HS, and I don't remember what it is. (I vaguely think it might be like Mexican Independence Day, but then I have no idea from whom they were trying to become independent.)

Mexican Independence (from Spain) Day is Sept 16. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of a battle victory in the Franco-Mexican War and is a bigger celebration north of the border than south. Though my neighborhood is like 50% Mexican and there were street festivals and celebrations all weekend. And the Irish bar across the street is all decked out with Corona banners. So go figure.
My husband is bringing me the most unMexican Mexican food imaginable-Chipotle. I'm only eating MSPI safe foods. I tried a little bit of cooked dairy last week. The results were awful.

Chipotle was my best friend when I was MSPI! I love that their ingredients are so simple.

^^^This is the flour tortilla recipe I use. I tried using a small fondant rolling pin on them today and found it was much quicker and easier than my regular sized rolling pin. Lately, for corn tortillas, I just use the recipe on the back of the masa bag.
DH had a weird training thing until about midnight last night, so G and I ate leftover taco salad (which happened more by fluke than anything). I LOVE Cinco de Mayo and always think I should put together a party, but I never actually get around to doing it.
