Cradle cap

Does anyone have any effective cradle cap remedies? Our ped recommended the cradle cap treatment you can buy at the store but that seems to have only made it worse and made it spread up to her forehead. :(

Re: Cradle cap

  • We use the mustela newborn shampoo. It's worked well for us but it did take a few days. We only wash her hair every other day.

  • We religiously use the soft bristled hair brush in the bath and I've started rubbing a little baby oil on his wet head first and then massaging that in.  It has definitely taken the thick scaley look away and now he just looks dry so we use Eucerin skin calming lotion after each bath and that holds the cradle's cap at bay until the next bath.

  • I put olive oil on DD's head.  After about 10 minutes I use the comb that I got at the hospital and brush DD's head.  That takes off lots of the cradle cap!  Then I wash her hair.  I did this about 3 nights in a row and it took almost all of it off!
  • @kellydew09 what type of coconut oil do you use? I've been hearing this recommended for all things and I'm not sure what to grab!  TIA!

We also just did oil and a soft brush. I put oil on her head about every other day and it really worked. She still has some dry skin now, but it isn't much so a little oil or lotion does the trick.

  • I've used coconut oil too, although I've never tried leaving it on over night. I'll have to try that @kellydew09

  • I do the coconut oil thing too. But I just put it on about 15 minutes before bath time, and comb his hair out, then wash it out. After doing this twice (we wash his hair every other day) there's hardly any cradle cap left

We use this too. I tried all the home remedies and it didn't work. Tried the Mustela shampoo in addition to the lotion. I think it's cheaper at Buy Buy Baby with one of their 20% off coupons though. It worked great for DS.

I used coconut oil left on for a while then combed. I also wash wish mustela shampoo and it works great!

  • I did the olive oil and comb first to get rid of most of it. Now we maintain by washing every other day with mustela shampoo
  • I also use coconut oil. I do it at every other bath time and have him sit in a bumpo chair on the bathroom vanity facing the mirror. Ha ha, he loves it cause he gets to look at himself and me. I also give him a toy to keep him occupied and he seems to not mind. I let oil sit for a bit and comb and then wash hair. It's taking us a few times. And still working on it

We did a combination of this - when hers was really bad, I put coconut oil on about 30 minutes before bath time, washed with the Mustella foam shampoo, then brushed with the soft bristled brush. We did this every other night, and it was clear in a week. We're currently still using the Mustella shampoo (will use up the bottle), and brushing after every bath; so far it's stayed clear!

ETA: The Mustella shampoo is a bit pricey, but it lasts a long time! I bought it when she was a few weeks old; we use 2 pumps every other night, and there's still quite a bit left.

We used olive oil and were also told we can pick it off with our fingers. If you so brush lo's hair you are to brush it back and away from the face so it doesn't spread. Since we picked it off it hasn't come back.

I did this too but with Vaseline bc I didn't want him to smell like olive oil, lol!

ETA: I was sad bc most of his hair was gone after that :(

  • I use coconut oil too, LO has my dry skin so I use it as a lotion as well as for diaper rash cream . Can't get enough of it!

  • This weekend I slathered some coconut oil on his scalp and let it sit a while. Then, I used a fine toothed baby comb to pull up the scales (all while he was sleeping). I let it stay on overnight and shampooed the next morning. I got almost all of it and the coconut oil moisturized his head!

Pretty much this. DD didn't seem to mind the comb, so she sat between my legs while I watched a movie and combed the last of the scales out. I did the oil or Eucerin after bath + comb routine about 4-5 times before it was completely gone. It's been a couple weeks and hasn't returned.

@tarajeannette‌ I know a girl from college who looks just like you and she's a major hippie, so in my head, you are too! I was shocked when you said you were watching a movie with LO bc the girl I know would never allow screen time! Lol I'm glad you're normal though!!
  • Thanks for all the suggestions! We just now did coconut oil, combing, brushing, shampoo, and baby oil instead of lotion to moisturize. I know it will need done a couple more times but she's looking great! :) Thanks again :)
