Flat Spot on LO's Head (update in comments)

About a week ago I noticed that the right side of the back of LO's head is kind of flat.  It's not so flat that it's noticeable just by looking (though that could be because she has a lot of hair), but it caught my attention when I was feeling her head one day.  When her hair is wet and you look down at the top of her head, it's pretty pronounced though.  Her head is definitely misshapen.  Now, of course, I'm freaking out about it to the point of obsession.  LO is six weeks but the earliest I could schedule her 2 month appointment with the pedi was the 28th.

I've gone over and over in my head about how this could have happened.  We hold her a lot, so it's not like she's neglected and laying down all day, though she does spend the average amount of time in her swing or on her activity mat, etc.  She only sleeps on her back, as recommended.  I noticed when she's laying down she does favor resting her head on the right side, but how could normal activity and sleeping cause this?  I'm wondering if maybe she was born with it and I just didn't notice?  I've tried making sure her head is resting on the left when I put her down to bed or naps from now on, in an attempt to even it out, I guess.  Googling certainly didn't help because it basically told me that there's nothing that can be done.  Anyway, I'm just upset and anxious about it, and miserable thinking I have to worry about this until the 28th when we can see the doctor.  My mind goes to all kinds of weird places, like the shape of her head will effect the growth of her brain and then she'll have all kinds of problems, etc.  Ugh.

  • Thank you, ladies! Your responses made me feel better. I called the pedi office and couldn't get in any sooner but the doctor is going to call me back later today. Hopefully he will reassure me even more. I will update with what he says...

  • I agree with the chiro!! Fallyn Has been getting adjusted since birth
She too has a flat spot so I'm trying yo wear her more and hope it goes away with time

  • This is completely normal. It should correct itself by a year. Very few babies need any sort of corrective treatment (ie helmets). Definitely see your pediatrician but please do not worry about this! I work in neurosurgery and have consoled many crying moms over this and it is really nothing to worry about and definitely do not feel guilty! It's a very common thing. Do your best to switch sides when you can and do your tummy time. Hope this helps!
  • DS has a flat spot on the back, right of his head also. At first I was nervous about it, I know he favors his right side, but like pp said I figured once he sits up more, it'll even out in its own. I do want to know what your dr says though!

My son had a flat spot (on the left side) he favored his left side when sleeping and that's what caused it. Your doctor will need to check mobility in your LO's because if your baby has limited mobility you'll need physiotherapy.

For us it was a "significant" flat spot and his forehead had shifted and his ears were not aligned.
We had to do extreme repositional therapy and we could not out him on his back unless sleeping or in the car. He learned to love tummy time pretty quick.
When he slept we had to force him on his right side (he had to use rolled up towels to wedge him - on doctors directions) and he could only sleep on his rigg side for 1 month.
It didn't get worse!! Yay! But it didn't get better right away either. It took almost a year for it to be almost back to normal.
We avoided a helmet, but just barely. It's good you caught it now because they say if caught before 3-4 months you can avoid the helmet.

  • Thank you again for all your responses, everyone. I spoke to a new doctor (not our regular pedi, but his wife, who is also a pedi at the practice) and she pretty much said everything you all have said: reposition LO to keep her on the other side, do tummy time, try not to put her on her back more than necessary. She said once LO can hold her head up and not have to lay down all the time it will probably even out. She said its pretty common in babies and rarely needs special treatment, and that they'll keep an eye on it at all our checkups. If for some reason it gets worse they'll refer us to a specialist for treatment (helmet), and if that's the case it'll need to be done before LO is nine months. However, like you all have said, I'm trying to relax and not get too far ahead of myself. I guess it's prob normal to panic when you think something is wrong with you LO though! And it's prob not nearly as bad as my mind thinks it is. We'll see at our appt in three weeks...

I think my only issue now is that LO HATES tummy time. It's our fault for not starting it early enough. She usually gets frustrated and eventually starts screaming and i I feel bad so I flip her over after a minute or two. Today she was so pissed she managed to flip herself over to her back. We're going to have to work on it, and I don't think there's any trick to it; I'm sure at some point she'll stop fighting it, hopefully.

  • Glad to know its not just my LO! Thanks for the tips, I will try the boppy :)

  • So people regularly take their LO's to a chiropractor? I have an employee who takes her kiddos but I have never heard of it before. This really is a thing?
  • In general there is around 60lbs of pressure put on a baby's spine as they travel through the birth canal!
So chiro adjustments are a great thing and def help with colic and digestion
    :)
  • @mommyKT310 - I ordered it, thanks for the suggestion!  I also got the Boppy Noggin Nest Head Support.  Hopefully these will work!

All who suggested the chiro - I am definitely going to see about taking LO.  Thank you; I wouldn't have thought of that.

The helmet isn't that bad honestly. I know a few people who have used them and they work brilliantly.

  • Try doing tummy time while lying on you. LO will love looking up at your face.

  • 2 things:

1.) Our babies hate tummy time too and this has helped a bunch!

2.) The helmets have started to be outed as a "fad" and may not be necessary ... There's a bunch of articles about it, but this is the most recent one I read.

  • Wills head is very flat and misshapen. My pedi told us to start PT for it so we are including it in our BabyNet goals. We routinely make fun of his crooked head the poor boy.
  • We have this issue. We saw a plastic surgeon and have a neurosurgeon appt next week. The best thing we are doing, though, is physical therapy. I'm not a fan of chiropractors. The PT showed me stretches to do with LO to loosen his neck muscles and how to keep him from sleeping on the 'bad' side. Google plagiocephaly stretches, and I bet you could find tips, too.

  • You could also have her sleep on your chest to stretch her neck the other way, and also try wearing her with her neck turned the other way.
