LO sleep position HELP!

So my LO is 2 weeks old and he has been having trouble with mild reflux and lots of gas. He is currently sleeping in a RNP at night, but often gets uncomfortable and won't sleep for more than an hour. This morning I was burping him on his tummy and he fell right asleep and slept like that for 2-3 hours. I watched him closely, of course. Anyone else have a belly sleeper? Do you let them sleep like that? When can they safely sleep on their bellies? Any good alternatives other than the RNP? He spits up while lying flat, so the crib is a no go for a while. Any advice? Per the pedi, I am using gripe water/gas drops to help his tummy.

Pretty much all babies will sleep 'better' on their tummy, which is part of why they shouldn't- it's too deep of a sleep so they wouldn't stir if/when they get caught in a bubble of their exhilations- or at least that's one of the SIDS theories.

tummy sleep is 'approved' once LO is able to roll themselves into that position (and preferably out of it too). In the mean time I think the incline is unfortunately your best bet.

Once DD was able to roll back and forth (meaning she could put herself on her stomach on her own) I let her sleep that way, which was somewhere between 5-6 months I think. Prior to that I would not let her sleep on her stomach unless I was there watching. However, once she started belly sleeping she never stopped! She's going on two and still sleeps that way. :)

My daughter slept onher tummy from about two months because that was the only way she slept decently. Exactly how much it increases the risk of SIDS is not clear, but since we were minimizing risks in other ways (breastfeeding, no smoking, using a pacifier and a fan), and here are also I risks of not sleeping enough (to the whole family :) ) I felt ok about the decision. Ime there are lots of people who let their babies sleep on their tummies, people just don't talk about it.

This baby so far sleeps ok swaddled on his back so we've done that.

  • If LO is having tummy troubles, she sleeps on my chest on her stomach. I stay awake and watch her, like you said. If you are watching closely, I don't see the harm in giving LO some relief.
  • My LO has reflux to, what has been working for us is a rolled up blanket under her sheet that raises her head a little so she isn't flat. I am sure this is frowned upon but you do what you can.

My guys are mostly in RnPs to sleep but sometimes we do belly sleeping as well. The bassinet has breathable sides, we have a fan running, no loose blankets/pillows and they have pacifiers so Im not really worried. Sometimes that's just how they sleep their best.
