Hunger vs Sleepy Cues?

DS is 4 weeks and I'm still unsure of his hunger vs sleepy cues. I recently transitioned from EBF to bottle feeding, so before when he would cry I would just give him the boob. I don't want to feed him unnecessarily of course. Obv if he's yawning he's tired but at times he is crying and I feel so unsure of what he needs at that time. What are your LO cues for hunger and being tired? Am I the only one struggling with this??

Re: Hunger vs Sleepy Cues?

  • When my DD is hungry she tries to
Chew on my face or my arm when I holding her. When she is tired, she will just hang out in my arms or she fights to keep her eyes open.

  • My LO sometimes looks hungry (tries to latch on whatever she can reach, rooting) when really she's tired. I offer my pinky finger and a pacifier and if she doesn't want either, I feed her. I'm starting to be able to hear the difference in her cries but I'm not good enough at it yet to be able to explain it.
  • When LO is hungry, she tries to eat everything, her arm, the couch, my neck...whatever. When she's just fussy and tired, she will just lay there and stare and actually want her pacifier. Homegirl won't stay on the boob unless she's really hungry, if she just wants to suck, she wants the pacifier.

  • I sometimes find myself doing a trial and error to figure it out. If the baby gets mad at the paci like there's no milk coming out, try a bottle. If you have a bottle made, they'll sometimes play with the nipple rather than sucking or get mad at the bottle and almost swat it away if they don't want it.
My kids never rejected the breast regardless of their hunger status bc it was so comforting to them.

Also if I suspect it's sleepiness, I'll hug them tight (like a swaddle would), shush, and jiggle/rock them and if their eyes start rolling back, I know it's sleepiness.

  • Listen to the cry...I remembered newborn 'words' from an Oprah Winfrey show episode and recently watched it on YouTube to remember the 5 words. This has helped me tremendously.

If the cry sounds like a 'neh' then the baby is hungry. If the cry sounds like an 'owl' then the baby is tired. If the cry sounds like an 'eh' then the baby is not comfortable- most likely a diaper change is needed but could also be that baby is uncomfortable. The other two sounds are for gas (sounds like ''meh") and for lower abdomen discomfort (sounds like "wair.").
