STTN & BF supply

My pediatrician said to let my LO STTN since he has regained his birth weight, but my LC said to continue waking him (or let him sleep and pump) every 3-4 hrs so I don't lose my supply, but my question is at what point can I sleep through the night without hurting my supply? I'm exhausted. LO will sleep 5-6 hour stretches at night if I let him and I just want to sleep too.

Re: STTN & BF supply

  • I would let him sleep 5-6 hours if he will go that long, so I agree with your Ped. If you get super uncomfortable by then, you can set an alarm to get him up a little sooner, but I don't think you need to keep waking him every 3-4 hours.

  • When my dd started sleeping 10-12 hrs per night around 3 months I let her and I didn't wake to pump. My supply never suffered for it. I ended up waking up around 430 am to pump around 9ish months due to my daytime supply dropping a bit. It was easy to pick that session up when needed.

  • Sleep!!! Good heavens, mama, sleep! Assuming no issues with weight gain, there's no reason to pump overnight.

ETA: Tessa was doing 5-6 hour stretches from the first week and I never even woke her then. Rebel STM in the houuuuse!

Same here. My first woke up a lot at the beginning, but this kiddo loves to sleep. He has been sleeping 5-6 hr stretches since we left the hospital (if I don't wake him) but my LC freaked me out a little so I started waking him. I love that this kid sleeps, lol.

Absolutely sleep! Unless you already have supply issues, your LO will demand what he needs, and your supply will match it. If he can sleep without waking to eat, you should sleep without waking to express.

  • Lucky ladies!! I'm up every 2 hours! Or less. Sleep, mama!
  • Yeah I would feel ok about 5-6 hours. If you see your supply fall you can always reassess.

  • SLEEEEPPPP! As someone who's LO's longest stretch is 3 hours at night, I'm crazy jealous of you, so sleep for all of us who are up all night ;)
