IF and exercise

Morning ladies!

After getting on the scale this morning (yikes!) I have decided I really need to start taking better care of myself.  Between my IF diagnosis and the stress of the IUI process, meds that are making me crazy, and trying to take care of my family, I have gained about 6 pounds in a month and I don't see it stopping any time soon.  My last RE (I'm seeing a new one as of last Wednesday) said that I should not do any "strenuous" exercise, only yoga or pilates.  My former RE only spent about 2 minutes talking to me and then left me with his nurses.  I didn't like the practice so I switched to a new one and will be doing one more IUI cycle through them before moving to IVF.  I was so overwhelmed that I forgot to ask his feeling about exercise.  I am no marathon runner but I like to use my couch to 5K jogging app and go to spin classes.

Just curious how you ladies feel about IF and exercise.  What have your doctors recommended or told you to stay away from?

Re: IF and exercise

  • my doctors have not told me to stay away from anything. i am into some heavy impact stuff -- i run and i go to crossfit several times a week, as well as hot yoga about once a week. i didn't do anything differently after my first IUI but i think i will take it a little easier after my next IUI JIC. i start to go crazy if i miss more than a day or so in a row. hope i won't have to stay away completely if we have to move to IVF.

  • I have an elliptical and workout pretty much every day, that includes IUI and IVF cycles. During IVF I obviously have to stop after retrieval and then they rec. nothing during the 2WW, so that is pretty much the only time I don't work out.

I've heard some Drs say no exercise or light exercise, and some say do whatever you've always done, but I think the consensus is- don't start any new work out regimen during this process.

Of course now anything is "new" because my other RE made me stop my old exercise routine at the end of March.  I am going to keep up with my walking and add back my spin classes.  I think it will be good for me mentally.

  • I think to add to @Mrs Castillo's comment about adding anything new, I think it's strenuous and intense that should be avoided. And "during this process" can mean a lot of things to a lot if people. If you want to start exercising, starting gradually and low impact is fine, in fact good!

The only thing mentioned in this thread that was alarming to me is the hot yoga. I would avoid that furring the tww as I would during pregnancy to avoid my body temp from getting too high. I've never done it in the first place, though, so I don't know how much it actually impacts body temp.

I totally agree.  I'm not a serious runner and I feel like starting slow with my couch to 5K app before the 2WW is not strenuous.  And one thing I like about my spin class is that you can cheat and make it less tough by using lower gears.

  • I think walking and spinning around pretty low impact anyway right? I can't not work out, I just can't! I can't function at all without some form of exercise, so the best I can do to compromise, is to not workout during my 2ww of IVF cycles.

My RE said no exercise. I think this was partly due to the fact that I'm kind of a gym rat and tend to go pretty hard. I've met her in the middle. I've eased up a lot but I need to work out or I go nuts.

My obgyn told me exercise is fine. I want to be able to listen to her but I feel like the RE I is more reliable.

So that was an all over the place amswer. Basically I was told no and I'm being a rebel!
  • My RE is very strict about exercise - no exercise (beyond walking) after FET / IVF stim through the first trimester.  And no heavy lifting more than 10 lbs.  Seriously.

But with my history it makes me so freaking nervous that I follow all the rules.  Not that it has helped...but I know if I broke the rules I would blame myself...

Only walking for me.  My boobs are too bouncy for any of that running/jogging nonsense.
