April 2014 Moms

When Green Turns Blue...

I finally have the time and energy to get a birth story up here.

April 23 (day before EDD), I felt weird.  Nothing I could put my finger on but just out of sorts a bit.  Really restless.  I went to bed not thinking too much about the weird feeling.  I woke up around 2am to go pee.  Here comes the TMI.  I'd been having lots of mucus when I wiped for a couple of weeks so it was weird when there wasn't any but there was a weird plop sound in the toilet.  Here I thought I'd been losing my mucus plug a little at a time, but nope, there it was.  I didn't get too excited about that because it didn't really mean too much about the timing of labor.  So I went back to bed and was awake for playing games on my phone for a while when I felt a little gush.  I thought it was weird because I had just gone to the bathroom, then it hit me.  My water was breaking so I jumped (as fast as a pregnant lady can) out of bed and then the big gush happened.  My word, that felt gross.  Way more fluid than I ever imagined.  I called my sister who was my ride to the hospital, called DH who is away at school and got ready to go.  Contractions started about 15 minutes after my water broke, each one about 7 minutes apart.  After a 1.5 hour drive we met DH at the hospital.  My contractions were now about 5 minutes apart and really strong.  After the nurses assessment they say there is meconium present.  We get to the birthing room and contractions are now about 3 minutes apart and incredibly strong.  I had really hoped to go med free so I was just trying to focus on breathing.  I got in the tub and that took some of the bite out of the contractions but not enough for me to handle.  So after talking with DH we decided to go with drugs because I was just not able to breathe through all of the pain.  I got back into the bed and they tried giving me laughing gas during a contraction but the mask in my face was extremely irritating so I didn't take that drug option.  They gave me some morphine which did absolutely nothing and the contractions were getting stronger.  So we went for the epidural which helped for a little bit, but then the nurses were getting concerned because I was still breathing through the contractions.  They tried adding some other drug that I can't remember the name of a bunch times.  But then my contractions started getting further apart so they added some pitocin which made the contractions stronger but no longer controllable by the epidural.  I don't know how much time had passed but the Dr had checked me and I was at 9cm, but the baby's heart rate was going up and down and not overly stable.  So the Dr gave us the choice to keep going because I was so close to 10cm or c-section.  We said whatever was best for the baby.  So csection it was.   I was given the spinal and it didn't take so I was knocked right out.  DH didn't get to see our baby be born (sad).  After 18.5 hours I was the mom to a beautiful boy.  We had a longer stay than I had expected due to infections in Joshua but now we're home and trying to figure life out with a boy.  It's awesome.
