Pack N Play VS Bassinet or Both?

Is a pack and play AND bassinet needed if we live in a one-story flat?  We want to be able to have baby sleep in our room and transition him/her to the crib in their room.  We originally registered for a bassinet for this purpose, and also a pack n play.  Someone suggested that we may only need the pack n play, because baby can sleep in that at night, in our room, until they transition to the crib.  Was also told that since we live in a one-story flat, the bassinet wouldn't be necessary, and a waste of money since it can only be used for a few months.  Your opinion?

I don't think you need both.  You'll probably get more use out of the PNP because you can use it for a few years -- if you travel, for example, or as a play pen.   The baby will outgrow the bassinet pretty quickly.

  • Thank you both for your responses - you've confirmed what I have thought.

  • We just had a pack n play as many of my girlfriend said their chidlren grew out of it so quickly. So we got the pack n play and it made for such an easy transition to crib. I say instead of a bassinet register for the rock n play. If your child happens to have reflux this is a god send.
  • The pack n play with the newborn napper attachment is really nice for the first few months b/c they are kinda snuggled in. I'd say look for one with that and skip the bassinet. Rock n play is nice too and much cheaper than a bassinet!

We loved the newborn napper!  It's nice because it's on a very slight incline, which helps if baby is congested or has reflux.  Just remember that it has a fairly low weight limit (I think 14 or 15 pounds?), and isn't very long.  Our DS is maybe 22 inches, and he is just about too long to sleep in it anymore, so we moved him down to the raised mattress of the PNP.  He transitioned really well.
