Birthday gift help

So my friends little boy turns 5 soon and DD and I are going to the party. I am clueless about what to get a 5 y/o boy. I usually go with my standard clothes from Carters but I feel like that is getting old. I want to get him something fun and am looking to spend about $20. Can anyone with a 5 y/o (or almost 5 y/o) boy give me some ideas? TIA!

Board games are a great choice at this age: Headbands, Trouble, Guess Who, Candy Land...or easy card games like UNO, Skipbo, Old Maid.

My DS also loves CAT trucks, building sets, army men, Imaginext toys, and pretend play stuff like tools, hats, or work belts.

In addition to the other things mentioned the Hot Wheels track sets are a hit at our house (there are wall tracks and some you can build on the floor), Chutes and Ladders, jigsaw puzzles (our 5 yo DS can do 50-100 piece with a little help but I'd stay away from the lenticular ones), outside play stuff like a soccer ball or baseball and glove.
  • My nephew just turned 6. He loves anything sports related (I gave him a glow in the dark soccer ball), dinosaurs, Legos (esp. Star Wars), Hot Wheels with the tracks.

  • I'd do an outdoor toy. I love having a kid with a spring birthday. We get toys that the kids love to play with, but no more clutter in my house. Total win-win.

  • It's heading into warmer weather, so I always go for outdoor items (sprinkler, sidewalk chalk, etc).  Parents usually appreciate, because it's less clutter inside.
