Thoughts on name Brielle?

Still having a hard time deciding on a girls name. The only one we both like is Sophie but I worry that it is much to popular.

Yesterday I came across the name Brielle? (Bree-Elle). Nickname would probably be "Brie". What are your thoughts?

Actually it is French. A short form of Gabrielle meaning god is my strength.... But fair enough. Wanted some honest opinions.

  • It was on my list, DH vetoed it. I like it. The NN Bree or Elle are so cute.

  • I don't like it. Not even as a nickname for Gabrielle.

  • I have always thought it was a pretty name, NMS, but very pretty. Definitely not side eye worthy, IMO.

  • It's NMS but I think it is fine. I don't think it sounds like a stripper name.

That's interesting. I've not been able to find a legitimate source to indicate Brielle is used in French-speaking countries as a short form for Gabrielle. Behind the name lists it as a modern, and largely American creation, despite some commenters insisting it's Cajun or French (As a Quebecoise and Acadien, I am doubtful of this connection). It is also municipality in the Netherlands and a borough in New Jersey.

ETA: Supporting my own experience, the Canadian province where Brielle enjoys the highest popularity (top 20) is non-francophone Saskatchewan. Brielle was only given to 6 baby girls in Quebec in 2013. It was given to zero babies in 2008.

  • Not my personal pick but it doesn't seem as extremely made up as some names I hear around. There are 2 other Brielles in DD's group of friends. Don't do Sophie. Even though I love it compared to Brielle, it is just so overused these days.
  • I don't know anything about the origins of V
Brielle, but I trust the other posters who claim it isn't legitimate. They're very knowledgeable in name etymology.

As far as made up names go, it's far from the worst. I do think it's pretty. Perhaps using Gabrielle as the full name with Brielle as the nn would be an option.

  • I generally tend to like nickname names. Brielle is ok, but I did talk my husband out of using it as a middle name for our daughter.
  • I think Brielle is pretty, but I haven't done the research behind the name like PPs have done.

As a side note, I know someone who named her little girl Briella and it just sounds like an evil stepsister to me!

  • Brielle has a trashy/uneducated vibe to me.

I don't care for the name. It sounds very Teen Mom to me. Plus, having taken fertility meds to conceive, it sounds too close to Bravelle.

  • It does have a slight made-up, teen mom vibe to me too, but I do think it sounds pretty.

  • I have never been a fan. Sounds like a weird combo of Brianne/Ariel.

Thanks for your opinions. Looking at your comments I have decided not to keep it in the running...
  • I love it. My daughter's name is Aubriella
  • I am a fan because my niece's name is Brielle.
    However, it's gotten quite popular.
