PTing the 2nd child

For those of you with 2+ children, do you find the younger ones are way more eager to PT? We still have the Elmo potty ring hanging on the side of the potty and lately DS has been really interested in it. I stuck him up on the potty a few times, fully clothed and he laughed. Now he is asking to go every time before he gets in the tub. The other night he peed before getting in the tub. Today he asked to get up, he was due for a diaper change so I just stripped him down and he peed again. Do you think it's coincidence or can a 16 mo old really be ready to PT? He obviously can't get his pants off and on, and with the exception of grunting and bringing me the potty ring he can't really communicate he wants to go. Would you just take it for what its worth, or start moving forward with PTing?

Re: PTing the 2nd child

  • I had baby #1 using the toilet for poops at 6 mos and, by 9 mos, she knew to get my attention and grunt to let me know she had to go. I wasn't as diligent with #2 because I was pregnant and it's hard to catch him in the act because he likes to poop post nap while still in bed. However, when I ask if he wants to use the toilet, he gets excited and sits on it. No poop yet, but a lot of interest. I wouldn't push it, but I'd keep putting him on if he wants to.

It depends on the kid. With DD I tried around 2 1/2 when I was off for Christmas. She wasn't ready, so we waited until closer to 3 when I was off for the summer. Worked much better. I was more ready with DD #1 then she was- wait until your kid shows interest and wants to go.

  • I told myself that I was going to wait until DD2 was REALLY ready and could really communicate her needs to me. Even though DD1 seemed ready and was going potty on her own well before the age of 2, it took a long time to get her fully potty trained. We had her 95% there, and then DD2 was born and she went completely back to diapers. I have vowed not to spend forever potty training. But then today, DD2 pulled on her diaper today, ran to the bathroom and sat on the little potty and then wiped herself (keep in mind she still had her diaper and PJs on). I am considering sort of starting it. Maybe. But then again.. maybe not.

I think it just really depends on the kid. DS was really curious about the potty around 15 months. We bought him his own around 16 months. He always wanted to use it so we would let him go on it here and there. I had no desire to PT him that early so we waited until he turned 2. He was pretty easy but he definitely had accidents. He turned 4 a few weeks ago and still wears a diaper at night. DD will be 18 months next week. She's never expressed any interest and that's just fine with me. We will see how it goes but I hope to PT her around 2 as well.

I have 3 kids and my first was fully PT (daytime, naps and bedtime) at 17 months old, my second at 15 months and 3rd at 14 months.  Honestly, I'm not sure having older siblings helped in anyway.  I will say the younger they were the easier it was whether that's from my experience in PT or just them personally.  But all were very easy, took less then a few days and not many accidents.  FWIW- I never expected my 14-17 month olds to be potty independent- meaning that they could take their pants off, get on the potty, wipe and pull their pants back on.  They were much older before they could do that and it never bothered me.  Helping them on the potty was much easier than changing diapers.
