Naps and Night

DS is starting to get into a bit of a routine. Yeah, he catnaps off and on all the time, but he has about a 2-3 hour long nap in the morning and again in the afternoon. Usually he just sleeps in the RNP downstairs while I work and clean, etc.

I'm thinking about swaddling him up during those longer nap times and putting him in the PNP upstairs, hoping to get him to start to associate that with sleep. I mentioned this to a fellow mom and she thought this may mess him up with nighttime sleeping. Her reasoning was there should be some things that are specially reserved for nighttime sleeping, swaddling and PNP being some of them.

Your thoughts?

  • I have heard the rationale that you need something to indicate that it's night time and time for a longer sleep. Personally I try not to make it too dark or quiet for daytime naps, especially for babies, then lots of dim lighting and quiet for night sleep.

Where is your baby sleeping at night right now?  In the PNP?

We also try to keep day and night separate.  Daytime naps are in the RNP downstairs, not swaddled.  Sometimes he'll nap when we take him for walks in the Ergo or if he's in the car.   Lights are on, everything is kept at a normal volume.  At night he's in jammies, in the PNP, it's dark(ish) and quiet (except for lullabies on his iPod).

You can try doing naps in the PNP and see how it goes.  If you're happy with his day and night sleeping now, then you might decide not to mess with anything (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).  But you can always try it and see.  Every baby is different, and you never know what will or won't work until you try it :-)

  • I do 1 swaddled PNP afternoon nap a day (when 2yr old naps) she seems to really like it. All other naps are in swing, car seat (running errands). She still does 2 good sleeps at night.

I'm starting to put dd down in her bassinet for naps. I'd prefer the crib, but she won't have that even at night right now, so bassinet it is.
