(Another) name question

I think we're going to name our son William after my grandpa, with James as the MN after my dad. But, the nickname! So hard. I generally hate unisex-sounding names (even if they're not spelled the same) but I really love the nickname "Lee" for William. I didn't even know that was a real thing until I met somebody who went by that and looked it up. Is it too weird? Is it too frilly for a boy? Should we just be safe and call him "Will"? It'll either be Lee or Will…although I haven't run the former by DH yet.

I've also never heard of Lee as a nickname for William. To me it sounds nothing like William I would stick with Will.

I love Liam! I'm just kind of shying away from it because I'm afraid it's too popular these days. I know, William is popular, but it's classic instead of trendy…

Edit: Oh, also, our last name starts with an M. I think it's a little awkward to have an m right by an M when you say the whole name. Lol, silly, but there ya go.

I have a friend named William, and he goes by Will to all except his wife, who calls him Willie. For me, Lee from Willie was a no brainer. If it works for your and YH, then go for it!

Any of those nns are fine, but for real long term, all this thought might not matter. My friend is named William and was called Bill all of his childhood- he hated it and started going by Will in college. So if you are dead set on him being called Lee- name him Lee.

Please don't call him Bill or Billy, because it'll probably get shortened to BJ, which is really unfortunate.

I don't like NN's that don't come natural (if that makes sense) Will comes natural for William but lee doesn't IMO. I like PPs suggestion of Liam. Or just wait and see what name comes natural, it could be something totally diff. We call my youngest dooey (name is Camden) and that's what my 2 year one has always called him so everyone calls him that now.

Although I like Lee and think it's plenty masculine, I think it's a stretch from William. I personally like Will as a NN for William because it makes more sense than Lee.
