Got my OB appt. scheduled (siggy warning)

Since we've hit the year mark without any BFPs I need to get in to see the Dr. I just changed insurances, so this will be my first appt. with this OB (who will then hopefully refer me to an RE right?) Unfortunately, the soonest they could get me in isn't until June 12th, so by then it will have been 14 months. I'm really hoping that it'll just turn into a 1st prenatal appt... but I'm not too hopeful at this point. What should I expect to happen at the appt? Any specific questions that I should ask?

Ask for a referral to an RE

I would ask to start testing. Sometimes an RE will repeat them, but I'd ask. It might take a bit to get in with an RE and having the testing complete will speed along the process once you're there. At a minimum, you'll need an HSG, semen analysis, AMH, and CD3 testing and t/v ultrasound.

You might want to check your insurance and see if you even need a referral. I know my insurance doesn't require one. That might save you a few months of waiting and possibly unnecessary testing. I'd probably skip testing with the OB/GYN as they often mess up and do them on the wrong day or miss things, which will just cost more to re-do.

Due to my OB changing the insurance group, I was able to get a referral to the RE from my family practice doctor. Also, I didn't have to see him. I just called the doctor's office and asked for the referral. Since the OB can't get you in very quickly, it would be worth a shot.

I agree with PPs - if you're waiting until June to see an OB just to get a referral, it might be worth it to look into whether you could make an RE appointment without a referral, or just get a referral by phone. Since you've TTC for over a year and fit the definition of infertility, I would think even your primary care doctor should be able to make that referral. Speaking from the position of just starting testing this month - it can't be done with soon enough!

I've got an HMO, so I have to get referrals to see any sort of specialist

I guess that I could see a different OB that could get me in sooner just to get the referral though...

I don't have an Primary right now either since I just switched insurance plans. I guess I know what I need to do tomorrow!

@megastar007 I also have an HMO. I have to get referrals for everything. Go for a primary care and see if they can get you in sooner than the OB.
