Getting the fat from pumped milk

Quick question for those mamas who pump milk and refrigerate for later.
I notice that a layer of thick milk/milk fat collects along the top/sides of the medela bottles I store the milk in. I assume this is the "good stuff" that I want LO to get in addition to the liquid in the bottle. Knowin that you aren't supposed to shake breast milk, how do I get this stuff off the sides and into the milk? I try to swirl vigorously but it's not cutting it!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Getting the fat from pumped milk

  • I slowly turn the bottle upside down a few times. That always works. Also, if you pour it into another bottle or container that will mix it well.

  • Sometimes warming it up on the stove in a pot of water will help get the stuff off the sides. Make sure you test on your skin before giving to baby to make sure it isn't too hot.

  • I swirl first and if that doesn't get it all I run lukewarm water over it if I don't want it warmed yet (like if I'm moving it from storage bottle to tommee tippee for the next day)
  • I float my bottles in a dish of water with the tap on full blast it warms the bottle and it swirls back together easier. But I also don't give cold bottles.
  • Oops didn't know you weren't supposed to shake it... I usually would swirl it around though
  • I swirl it, had no clue you can't shake it though. I automatically didn't since cow's milk goes frothy, figured it would too. Anyway thanks, the more you know!

Same. I had no clue and shook it for my first 2 kids for a year each. Won't be doing it anymore

I run the sides of the bottle under warm water while swirling.  Only takes a few seconds.

  • Whoops, I've shaken some before pouring and freezing. Definitely not doing it anymore, but is the milk really RUINED? I have no idea which bags I did it to.

  • I swirl the milk to mix it. Although my understanding regarding the shaking can damage proteins in the milk...it doesn't do anymore damage than when the milk is frozen then thawed, so if you did shake the milk before knowing you shouldn't, it's really ok.

Jumping on the "I didn't know you couldn't shake it, and I have" train. Oh well, won't be doing it again!

  • ^^me too!!
  • I've shaken it every time. :-S I'll be swirling from now on, though.
  • I always shake it. How else am I supposed to mix in all of his fortifiers? Swirling wouldn't blend the oil. I wonder what shaking actually does. Hmmmm . . .

The heat from my hand while swirling usually gets the fatty part back in solution, if not, bottle warmer :)

If I'm pouring into bags, I either swipe it off the side into the milk if I can reach it, and if I can't, I transfer the milk and then run a little warm water on the outside to melt the cream and then pour it into the bag.

I do exactly this; then I pour it into a drinking bottle, and I warm again from there if it's still too cold.
