Breastfeeding Support Group

If you attend a group, what do you like most about the group? How is your group structured?

What would you like to be seen added or done differently in your group?

Reason I'm asking is I'm about to start a group and just getting ideas, etc to see what moms out there really like or are looking for in a group! Even though I'm a BF momma, I would like to make sure I'm gearing toward what others really want so their time is well spent!
Thanks!

Re: Breastfeeding Support Group

  • The opportunity to ask questions was really helpful for me at the beginning. Very relaxed environment. Its seems to engage better when the leader has a overall topic to discuss and then allows everyone to chime in

  • My group is 2 hrs long. The first hour is facilitated by an IBCLC, and the second half is just moms. Typically the LC lets the moms give advice rather than answering everything herself, and I like that balance a lot. Real, current, experience plus the expert.

I have really enjoyed getting to know other moms, getting input from moms with babies who are older, and discussing things not strictly BF related. We also have a Facebook group for support between meetings.

The only criticism I have is that it's hard to contribute when there are more than a dozen moms. I wouldn't want to limit the group size, though, unless it were closer to 20. (Typically there are 10-16 moms)

  • I love my group! We start w introductions and then the newest folks (usually w youngest babies) ask questions and receive help first. The LC helps answer and all the moms can chime in. The LC is very hands on and will do a mini consult w folks if they need it. We usually go about 90 minutes.

Of course weighed feeds are a huge benefit. If time allows, we also do a show and tell of products that we like and find helpful. Usually they are BF or baby wearing related.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

Mine was only an hour but it was in the evening and generally only had 5-7 moms. We started with weighing all the babes. The the LC went around asking how everyone was doing and answering any questions. While she went around the moms not talking to her nursed and socialized. If time permitted the LC would share an article or topic like intro'ing solids. We finished with a final weighing of the babes.

I loved the casual atmosphere. I mostly went for time with the LC at first and for the weighed feedings and social aspect later. I loved the evening time so I could go after work and meet other working moms. My fav meeting was when the LC brought in some demo pump flanges and helped anyone with pumping Qs.

Also she did a little celebration whenever an mom and baby pair reached one year BF'ing!!

  • I think it is helpful to go around and introduce each mom/baby and mention any struggles/questions.
