BF and TFAS

Hi everyone, I usually post on TTGP but thought you ladies might have some good insight. I have a 14 month old whom I am still BFing. I have not gotten my PP AF however had spotting this past weekend. It took us a long time to conceive DD and thus we are anxious to start TTC #2. Any helpful thoughts on how to improve my fertility or things that ladies here TFAS might be doing? I am going to see OBGYN at end of month to get everything checked out and just started temping,

Re: BF and TFAS

  • I'm still nursing my almost 2 year old and I only just got my first pp AF at 23 months pp.  This was with her sleeping through the night and nursing 3-5 times in a 24 hour stretch.... I was really hoping for my fertility to resume sooner (we'd been wanting to start TTC again since she was around 12 months but weaning is not an option for us).  Anyways, I have been doing a lot of things to try and kick start some fertility but the only thing that seems to have had a quick affect is acupuncture.  I have been going once a week for the past 4 weeks and now I'm switching to every other week for a while until things hopefully get straightened out.  It was a struggle to get pregnant with our DD so I'm not assuming things will be quick as we try for a sibling either.  My first pp AF had a very short LP which isn't too surprising since we are still BFing.  I am now on CD 22 and no O yet so who knows.  Definitely keep up with the charting so you can see what is going on once things do resume.  Also, try and change up your nursing schedule.  Does your child nurse at night still?  We gently night weaned at 18 months in the hopes to get things back but that didn't quite work for us.  We then slowly switched from nursing on demand to only in the morning, before/after nap, and before bed.  After changing up the nursing routine, I have added in taking vitamin B12 supplements, a biphasic tincture from my naturopath, and seed cycling since last August and like I said - also trying acupuncture.  If you google the seed cycling that may be a good place to start after you address how much you are nursing.  Good luck!

  • Thanks! Would love to keep in touch in case I have any questions. GL to you. Our DD took a while as well so we are nervous about how long RFAS will take.

  • Kellymom.com has some good articles on fertility and breast feeding. Sometimes just weaning at night or stretching the time between feelings will help.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

    My Charts since 2009

  • I'll give you my experience.  We decided we wanted to try for #3 while I was still BF #2.  I got my first pp period at 13 months PP.  My cycles seemed regular, but I started charting just to see if my luteal phase was normal.  My first month charting and fully breastfeeding (on demand) my LP was 5 days.  I had a late O, so my cycle was a normal length.

I went back and worth on whether or not to wean.  I ultimately decided to wean, since I wanted to have baby #3 sooner rather than later.  I started the process and my LP went to 8 days during the weaning process, then to 12 days after he was fully weaned.  He was fully weaned at 16.5 months.

It took 3 cycles after that for my BFP.

I read up on it and it sounds like your LP may lengthen on its own over time, but rarely a woman needs to wean to get pregnant.  I didn't want to take the extra time to "wait and see", so I chose to wean.  It's really a personal decision.  Are you willing to put off having a baby to continue to nurse your current one?  My decision was also based on the fact that I probably wouldn't BF much longer anyway, so I didn't see stopping a few months early as a huge deal.

It's tough because I don't want to stop but I also want to have another baby. Being 32 and that the first baby took 2 years I'm conflicted. I will wait and see what this cycle temping brings along with what my OBGYN says later this month. It's a tough decision for me as there is no guarantee we will have another and I don't want to regret weaning.
