Birth Control - Mirena

I'm going in for my PP appointment this week and wanted to chat with my Dr. about birth control options. I'm thinking of having Mirena implanted, but wanted to know if others would like to share their experiences. Have you used it?

Some facts:

1) Not planning on having other children

2) Use to be on OrthoTriCyLo pre baby - not opposed to it again, but would prefer to not be on the pill for 10-15yrs

3) 29 yrs old - so looking for something long term

4) not fond of condoms

5) Married and monogamous

  • I'm getting it done this week. Make sure you're at least 8 weeks pp it they can't place it.

Mine was placed at 6.5 weeks. It depends on your doctor.

To PP - it's a viable option being long term. I liked having no periods for 5 years before this pregnancy. Plan to have this one replaced with a new one until menopause.

I would talk to your doctor about it. I haven't had any side effects but some people get them all!

  • I had mine put in on Thursday. Some bleeding, but that's the only side effect so far.

  • I was on it previous to this lo.  I liked it for the first 3 yrs then wanted it out... I procrastinated for another year.  I had little to no bleeding after the initial first few months.  Your situation sounds like you are perfectly suited to it.
  • Thanks ladies

  • I have had mine for 4 weeks now and I have no complaints. I spotted/cramped for a few days and then started what seemed like a period. About 3 weeks post insertion I started cramping really badly and called my doc thinking something was wrong. Apparently cramping/spotting is normal for the first 3-4 months. It isn't bad, just don't be surprised.
  • I've had my mirena for 3 weeks. So far, my only side effect had been spotting (I believe it's stopped for now. No complaints from me!
  • I'm still waiting for mine to come in. I'll be getting it in the next week or so.

  • I posted specifically about mirena not too long ago (there are some good replies about mirena on that thread), because I was having some issues right after its placement. Have you considered the copper IUD, which last longer than mirena - 10 years?
  • I'm going to be the pessimistic one... I had a mirena in the past and had many complications. I had to go on depression meds, my thyroid level shot way up, I developed acne which I had never had in my life, I gained 13 lbs, and I had severe fatigue. Once I got it removed, a couple weeks later I felt a million times better. I got off the meds, my TSH went back to normal, and I was less fatigued (but then I got PG...). Oh, not to mention DH hated it because he could feel the strings.

My 2 sisters in law loved theirs though. :)
