Pregnant after 35

Has anyone else's Dr acted like your uterus is going to turn to dust because you're over 35?

I am 39 and 19 weeks along with my 2nd(my first dd will be 7 at the end of May)... I never had any complications with her pg until after I was in labor and delivered her... My bp didn't want to come down after I had her for some reason.

This time around they say I have gestational diabetes because I had to be put on metformin before I got pg for a high fasting insulin number.  So they automatically have me testing my blood 4 times a day, which is fine I'm actually happy knowing these numbers and everything has been GREAT with those numbers.  I have been told later on in the pg my hormones could cause those numbers to get crazy and I may have to be put on insulin.

So at this point I have THAT going against me PLUS my age... Every time I go to the dr's I honestly feel like they are just slapping so many more tests at me JUST because of my age.  It's like they don't look at my history at all.  It gets very frustrating for me.

Also, this last dr's appt (I have a group of Dr's I see and they want you to see each Dr at least once through out this process) and I had never met this dr before and I didn't hear good things about her.   I had never had any issues with my bp through out my pg with my first dd and it's been really good so far during this pg.  I even take it at home(again to just be informed how things are going with me)... I took it that morning before my appt and it was 130/71.  That afternoon at the dr's it was 150/96 and the nurse that took it goes "oh that's high!"  So they told me to lay on my left side until the dr came in, long story short, the dr actually came in and in her words (after this incident happened) she "pissed me off on purpose to see if my bp would spike"   And in fact it did it went up to 170/100.  I was beyond livid with how she treated me and I'm the type of person, once I'm mad, it takes me a bit to calm down.  She did this in front of my husband and 6 yr old dd.  Then she starts going into how I'll be seeing them A LOT and having all kinds of testing done, it was a nightmare of an appt because she had me scared out of my mind.  We get to the car and my dd starts to cry and says "mommy is there something wrong with the baby"  her scaring my dd is NOT ok.

I've taken my bp every day(mutliple times a day) when I'm at home since that appt and I have had NO bad readings.  I go to see a different dr (and will refuse to see her again from here until the end of my pg) next week and I will be letting him know what she did to me and ask him what I need to do to report the incident.

Sorry to ramble on, this was just such a bad experience for me... it's bad that we worry enough as it is then for her to be all gloom & doom after ONE high bp reading was very frustrating.

Thank you for listening.

  • Sorry you are experiencing that, I would possibly look into another care giver if after you speak with dr/practice manager things don't change.  Pissing a patient off on purpose is NOT at all common practice..

I did have multiple apts based on age alone, multiple ultrasounds/ NST's my blood pressure was fine and no gestational diabetes so yes please do expect more apts than a younger than 35 pregnant patient.  I hope things go well with your pregnancy and one high bp is to be watched not a huge concern...

ps I'm 41 delivered in March a very healthy boy, my 5th

While my doctors (I see multiple OBs in a practice, too, and a MFM since I have type 2 diabetes) have run every test in the book on me, they have generally been very positive about how things are going. I work very hard to keep my diabetes under control, and I would be seriously pissed if one of my doctors tried to undermine my efforts by screwing with my test results. I think if I were in your position, I'd look for a new OB practice.

Who on earth deliberately upsets a pregnant woman to see how it would affect blood pressure? What a freakin witch! I agree with Mary97 - never see her again or find another practice if she in unavoidable.

I'm 37 expecting my second in nov. Had my 1st at 36. My doctor just does some additional blood work. She says women are having babies much older. Like in their 50s. I was concerned Bout my age; but she isn't. I'd say change doctors. This one has an outdated perception.

First, some background: I am 41 and working on my second baby. My son is six. My first pg I was very healthy, though they watched me like a hawk, expecting me to have gestational diabetes because I have PCOS and my son was getting really big. They made me get extra glucose tests and they did monthly u/s on me (which was cool, since I got to see my baby a LOT!). I never did develop GD, and my son was born absolutely perfect via c-section at 39 weeks, 2 days. He weighed 11lbs, 4oz and was 22 inches-- not at all fat but long and lean! He still is! Now, with my second, they are definitely throwing lots of tests at me. We didn't do amnio or cvs last time, and I told them I had no intention of doing it this time either. I will do the NIPT and, because of my age and the increased risk of problems, they also want me to do the NT u/s at 12 weeks. Again, this is fine with me. Because of my PCOS and my really big baby last time, they want me to do an early glucose test as well. All of that being said. They have never been anything but positive with me. Yes, I am "Advanced Maternal Age", but my husband and I have excellent genes, are pretty healthy, and there is no medical history ever, on EITHER side, of genetic or birth defects of any kind. Does this mean it is impossible for something to go wrong? Absolutely not! But it sure does put the odds In our favor. I appreciate all of the extra care they are giving me, and to own the truth, though I am very positive, I will feel better when I am past these tests, but they have never treated me like a ticking time bomb. That "doctor" who made you angry on purpose? She should have her license revoked. I have never heard of anything more irresponsible or idiotic in my life. The first thing I would do is schedule an appointment with another doctor in the practice. Then start asking your girlfriends about different doctors. This would totally be worth subscribing to Angie's List. It can take some time to get an appointment, I know, so keep seeing your current practice in the meantime. Now, back to that appointment you scheduled with another doc in the practice.... Tell them everything. Not only did that psycho succeed in raising your blood pressure, she succeeded in scaring your daughter to tears. It was sick, irresponsible, and unprofessional. It is entirely possible that the other docs don't know she pulled that kind of crap. I'm not sure if you want to stay there, but if you do, tell them you are considering leaving but will stay as long as you never have to see Dr. Jackass again. If they balk, say fine, you will continue to look around for a new doctor and you will be posting about this incident on Angie's list (you would be surprised how much this scares businesses these days). BTW- I wasn't exactly clear... Did they actually test you for GD or odd they just assume it and jump straight to blood monitoring? Cuz if they did, that is kind of disturbing. Treating someone like they have a condition without making sure is bad medicine. I was on Metformin for PCOS when I got pregnant, and other than having me take an early glucose test (at 16 weeks) and having me stay on the Metformin, they are waiting to see of I actually develop it. I am sorry this is so long, but reading your entry made me furious! Good luck and keep us posted.
