@flerlgirl and other moms of 1+ year olds - made the switch?

@flerlgirl‌ just wondering since your DS is 1 now if you've made the switch to cow's milk? If so, how's it going? DD will be 1 next month and I'm looking for some insight. Anyone else have any advice on discontinuing formula? DD is BF and we supplement w/ enfacare. Just want to stop buying the formula but I'll continue nursing. TIA!

  • My kids are older.  Just offer milk in a sippy and see what happens.  If you are still nursing too - I don't think the switch is that big of deal just like offering another food optition.

  • Hey hey heyyyy! We have just started switching to cow's milk over the last two weeks, along with working more solids (DS pretty much just does purees still). What we do is alternate between formula and whole milk/solids. So bottle in the morning, then solids and whole milk the next time he is hungry, bottle at lunch, etc etc. We have slowly been taking away more formula and adding more solids.

He is currently taking the whole milk in a bottle because we have not found a sippy cup that pleases His Majesty. Another preemie mom told me her therapist said to try the more free-flowing cups instead of the ones they suck on so I am going to try that next. Good luck to you!

@Wally3‌ I don't have a full milk supply, so she takes about 15oz of enfacare a day through a supplemental nursing system while she nurses. I figured I'll need to replace the formula with milk. She'll take a straw cup with water no problem, but whenever I put formula in it she makes a face like its poison and she won't drink it :-/

@Laurendag‌ have you started offering D any wcm yet, or are you waiting till next month? @KikiCohen‌ @KittenD‌ any other j13 preemie mamas?

  • My boys aren't quite one yet, but when I did this w my oldest I double offered until he got the hang of a sippy of WCM. So I'd BF like normal but also offer WCM with meals. It took about two weeks and then I dropped the day time nursing sessions. We continued morning and night nursing until he self-weaned.

That's very helpful, thank you @carrotcake06‌! So maybe I'll eliminate the supplemental nursing system (with formula) from one nursing session, then after a few days eliminate it from another, all the while offering WCM with meals. Trying to wrap my head around it because with the supplemental nurses it makes this more complicated, and I worry about her weight still.

  • Ds was ebf but wasn't a fan of wcm. We added a little to bm and then increased the wcm over time. We continued nursing until he weaned himself at 18 months. He was in dc so he got milk at school and bm before bed It took a while to get him to drink it though. Good luck!

  • I haven't started any WCM yet.  We are slowly reducing his formula intake and increasing his solids though.  I plan to wait until we get the pedi's "blessing" to switch to WCM b/c we do have several family members with lactose intolerance.  Honestly, we will probably just try going to WCM "cold turkey" and see how he does.
  • @KTZ17‌ that sounds like a good plan - eliminating the SNS one feed at a time while also offering WCM at meals.

Don't be discouraged if the switch takes some time. For a bit, I warmed the milk so it was closer to BM temp and then eventually he drank it cold.

I really stressed about the whole thing w my oldest. But it ended up going smoothly. You both will figure it out!

  • FWIW, we finally had success with a Tommy Tippee easiflow sippy cup! It has a hard spout (is that the right word?) and can be totally free-flow or you can adjust the level of suction as well. DS liked that one when all others were rejected, so I hope that info helps!

@CeeBug‌ are your babies ff or bf? With exclusive ff I've heard some people gradually mix in cow's milk and decrease the amt of formula till they're exclusively on cow's milk. I've heard some people say their baby just likes the taste of cow's milk better than formula. Actually even my nephew didn't have a problem switching to cows milk and he was EBF. He went straight to it cold in a sippy. Here's hoping!!

  • also, don't think your kid hates WCM just because they won't drink it from a sippy.  DS refused to drink anything from a sippy including BM.  We thought it was that he hated the WCM but really it was the cup. He went straight from bottles to straw cups.  I am just adding this because we went through a lot of "pain" and money fighting with him to drink the WCM when it was really the cup.

@BostonKisses2‌ that's a good point, that maybe she associates the straw sippy with water so it's confusing for something else to be in there. Maybe I should try a spout sippy when we do the transition. I haven't given her any wcm yet, but she's had milk in food like mac & cheese. I was thinking of mixing milk into her oatmeal instead of formula to see how she tolerates it, but I'm waiting on actually giving her milk to drink until we see the pedi for her 12 month check up. I had asked her at the 9 month appointment if she would want to wait till she's 12 months adjusted to start wcm, but she said no, that 12 months actual is fine. I imagine her weight might play into it though, since she is still on the smaller side, but we'll see how much she's gained. This is the longest I've ever gone without having her weighed! I'm trying not to obsess over it!!

  • @kzt17 my premie never did well with straw sippy cups until he was much older.  Have you tried a spouted sippy cup?  They also have a sippy that is kinda in between a spout and a bottle which might be a good stepping stone.  Good luck.

  • My DD still had some formula in her diet up until about 18 months adjusted. I would give her WCM with meals and her drinks in between meals would alternate between WCM and formula.
