Birthday parties

This isn't about LO's first birthday party, but more of a general question about children's birthday parties as they get older.

There is a family that my family is very close to, in fact, we consider them to be our family. They have two sons (5 and 9), and they have big birthday parties for them every year. I'm talking 40 to 50 people probably, adult family and friends; and children from church, school, baseball teams, etc. all invited. They take home a truck-load of presents every year. We have started just giving them money in a card to either put in their savings account or spend, whatever their parents decide.

My question is what is done as far as birthday parties for children goes in your family or what have you observed among friends with older children? Do they have large birthday parties every year?

Re: Birthday parties

  • Except for grandparents, because they all live nearby, I don't expect any family to come to lo's birthday. After this year, I also don't think adult friends really belong at kid's birthdays unless they are parents of kids who are attending. I think first birthdays are more about celebrating being a family for a whole year and keeping the squawking poop-machine alive for that entire time.

Well my family blows as far as birthday parties. It has always been one party a month and it's for everyone who's birthday is that month. I never had my own party and I always had to share it with my niece and cousin since I was 5. I don't remember my birthdays before then. I know I might sound like a brat but I have always resented it.

  • No one we know really has a huge family.  Aiden's 4th bday party is tomorrow and it's a max of 18 kids (damn you non RSVP people who I have to assume are coming even though you probably aren't!) and the associated parents.  My brother, my ILs and my BIL/SIL and their kids are coming, as well as a few friends of mine but ultimately the boys will have a friends party every year of however many friends they want to invite, plus our few extra family members.

I guess things have changed, or my family just isn't the norm when it comes to birthdays. Lol. When I was growing up, we didn't have birthday parties where lots of friends and family were invited. We had a cake with our siblings and parents there. We got a gift from mom and dad and cards with money in them from grandparents. That was it. We just never had all of this big party stuff.
  • We haven't been to many birthday parties in the past few years. However, this year things have changed a bit. All my bridesmaids including me, have given birth so we have had quite a few birthday parties. They have been quite large due to 1st birthdays.
Growing up, though, our parties were immediate family and godparents. DH said he never really had birthday parties growing up.
On a side note, I come from a large italian family, so most of our parties have to be limited otherwise we could easily have a 100 person party. LO 1st birthday is hitting the 80 person invite rather quickly already.

  • We have discussed that the boys will trade years for big birthdays because they are a month and a half apart. But I think even the small ones will include all of their friends. Birthdays are a big deal to me so I want to make them special for my kids

  • We will be doing big parties with friend and family members for as long as I can swing it. I love hosting parties of any kind.
