A little help

Hi ladies,
This is my first time posting here but I've got a few questions for you.
My son was born yesterday at 1245 via c section. We had about 20 minutes skin to skin before they took him to the nicu for having trouble breathing.

The nurse told me to go ahead and start pumping and that the nicu would give him my milk when he was able to. And she said every 2 and a half - 3 hours for 15 minutes each side.

Well my first pump I got 10ml total from both breasts. The. The next pump I got 5ml total from both breasts combined and just now a little over 5ml from both breasts combined. I'm just wondering if this is normal/okay to have gotten so much the first time then not so much the following times?
Thank you for taking the time to read and help me....

Thank you for the fast reply! He is getting better every time I go see him. He can't take my milk yet but I'm still pumping away for him. I had no idea pumping was gonna be like this. Ivd been averaging 5ml each time and the nicu is just freezing it.

  • Congrats on your new LO! I was in the same situation... had an emergency c-section and DD was taken to the NICU because she had a little trouble breathing. She was born at 36 weeks and was in the NICU for 4 days. I wasn't allowed to try to nurse her until day 3. I pumped every 2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night. I barely got drops for the first few days, so it sounds like you are doing great! My DD ended up having some formula in the beginning because I wasn't able to pump enough. If that ends up happening in your situation, don't panic! Be sure and ask that they use slow flow nipples and put your baby to the breast whenever they let you. We were able to get 100% on the breast even after DD was bottle fed in the NICU. She is now 15 months old and nursing as I type this! Hang in there, try to get some rest, and keep pumping! Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

Oh cool! He hasn't been on anything but sugar water for 24 hours but he's popped three times. I can't wait til I'll be able to actually nurse. I was only allowed to hold him for the second time today. But he has a stomach tube so he can't nurse but he's got a strong suck. He was going to town on a binky in there!
