Help! Foremilk/hindmilk imbalance

Hi there- I am a ftm. On Tuesday, my son developed green, frothy stools along with other symptoms (fussy at breast, more spitty). I called lactation who confirmed my suspicion of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I have since been just feeding on one breast per feed to try and empty the breast well and get kiddo more hindmilk. Some of his symptoms have really improved (not nearly as spitty of fussy through feeds). The stools are seeming to improve (not as frothy) but are still a green-yellow shade. For those of you with experience in this area- how long does it take for the stools to go back to normal? It's only been 4 days but I don't want to overlook something like an intolerance to dairy. He has never had any trouble with dairy prior and lactation said that it didn't sound like a dairy problem with no blood/mucous present. Any insights??

  • I had the same problem. It should correct itself within a couple of days. However, you might need to go longer blocks of time on each breast. Try 4 hours only feeding from the same side, then change sides. Or 6 hours. I had to get up to 12 hours on one side, pump the full side, then switch. Only then did things normalize! Good luck.

Thank you! I will try longer blocks of time. The MOTN/first AM feed have been a challenge due to the long stretch of time. I would pump first but I hate to continue to perpetuate the problem...
  • Yeah, definitely don't pump unless you're ridiculously uncomfortable - like from 12 hours without feeding from that side.

What about in terms of days I work? I obviously have to pump something then. Should I just do exactly what I would do for feeds at home? So pump the one side only?
