The name Kaia - what comes to mind?

What are your first thoughts about the person/family when you hear this name?  I really like it, but I'm trying to get a feel for whether it matches our style.

Re: The name Kaia - what comes to mind?

  • How is it pronounced? I think of the boys name, Kai with an -ah. Sounds odd to me.

  • It's pronounced Ky-a, so yes, like the boy's name Kai with an "a".

Ok, then it reminds me of a Hawaiin family and "sea"

  • I think American Girl doll first (they spell it Kaya though). Super cute name for the doll, but I haven't decided if I like it IRL. I can definitely see it's appeal though. I guess it's just NMS.

It's NMS, I think a bit too cutsey.

  • I knew a Kaia whose parents were artists from Israel, so I think "international" and "artsy".

I live in the NYC area, so I pretty much always assume a cultural legitimacy for unusual but plausible names.

  • I think Hawaiian and like it.  I know an 8 yo girl w/ the name and she's a well behaved girl.  I also think of my cousin named Kyla due to the similarity in sound.

  • I've seen it used in movies and books, usually fantasy.  I actually really like it for a girl's name.

  • I also think of the American Girl doll and Hawaii.  I like the name.  Not sure if it has lasting potential though (if an adult could own it).

  • Like it a lot.  What comes to mind depends on the spelling, I have seen Kaia, Kaya, Kya, Kyah....I think if you like it, go with it.  You determine your style.
  • I love it! By then again, I'm baised. We have a son named Kai. We do live in Hawaii, but we aren't Hawaiian. And we don't plan on living in Hawaii forever, so he'll had to be a "Kai" in Texas or Colorado lol. "Kai/Kaia" also means Forgiveness, as well as Sea.

My son has blonde hair and blue eyes, but he still looks like a Kai. We knew a Kaia when we lived in Texas, and she was the most beautiful girl I've ever see. She had big gorgeous blue eyes and long dark hair.

     Go for it!

  • Kaya song by Bob Marley!  Love the song and the name!

Also, the fact that its Eastern European b/c I was really shocked when I found that out. Love the name, though ^_^

  • My cousin named her DD Kaia. She's 1 and it totally fits her. We are from a Norwegian heritage and it's a family name from several generations ago. At first I hadn't heard of it and didn't know how to pronounce it. I'd say go for it, the name is beautiful.

  • Kaia or Kaja (pronounced the same way -- like "eye") is a fairly common name in Estonia -- spelled with a J it means 'echo,' and I think it's pretty.  I know plenty of people with this name, and hence I have none of weird associations people here seem to ("it's a name given by teenage moms")!
  • I got a cutesy vibe, like a young mother wanting to be different and trendy but being knowledgable enough about name trends to stay away from the actual trendy names. Which probably makes no sense, but its what I thought

  • I like the way it sounds, but I don't like the way it looks. I would like it better spelled Kaya, like posters above mentioned, but not sure if that's a legitimate spelling of the name or not.
  • I think of the movie Willow - his wife's name is Kaia. I have visions of Warwick Davis running across the field to the mudhouse screaming, "KAIA!!!!" :D

  • I really like it. I would think their parents did a wonderful job naming their child :)

I've known 2 little girls named Kaya (I assumed it was spelled this way). I was told it comes from a Native American word for 'sister'. I think it's pretty.

  • I know a 3.5 yr old Kaia and her patents are older and affluent. It's a different name that gave me pause when I first encountered it IRL, but I also think it's pretty.

This. I love the song, but I can't decide if the name makes me think stoner/hookah/boozer/etc or not... I kinda think it does. Sorry. I would expect the parents of a Kaia to be young, poorly educated, lower income (and obviously the stoner association I mentioned).

What a random thread to resurrect!?! I just noticed it's from 2011... My above opinion of the name Kaia still stands :)

I love Kaia, with that spelling. I'm not sure personality wise what image comes to mind ... I picture a young woman who is quietly confident, gentle, strong, but easygoing. My image is probably influenced by a teenage Khija (family name; I think I'm remembering the spelling correctly but *maybe* it was Kaja?) I worked with back when I was in college. She gave me a very positive association. :)

ETA: Ah, gotta love a zombie thread.
