Csection moms (or other surgeries)

How long did you take heavy pain killers? I am supposed to give Will his meds as needed but it's really hard to tell if he's in pain. Just wondering if this is still a reasonable amount of time to still need his pain meds. He gets tylenol regularly.

I never took them so I have no concept.

  • You don't want to wait until he's in pain, stay on top of giving it to him as soon as its time. Once it wears off he will be in pain.

I took Percocet every 4 hours as directed for two weeks. If I didn't I was in pain. I then took it another 2 weeks but started weaning. I would follow the instructions

There are no instructions - just as needed. I can't tell if he needs it or not so it's just a guess. I definitely don't want him to hurt so I would be happy to give it to him!
  • He doesn't eat when he is on his oxycodone and just acts stoned so I don't like to give it unless needed.

I only took it for the 3 days in the hospital. However, I tend to tolerate pain really well.

Give him Tylenol every 6-8hrs, and if he still seems cranky, you can give him the stronger stuff!!

That's how I try to do it but he's never cranky. ;)
  • I took oxycodone and Tylenol together for just under a week, starting at a pretty high dose of the oxy and weaning down. Then I continued with just Tylenol for maybe another week. I would have needed a lot less of the oxy if I was less mobile, but because I was discharged less than 24 hours post-op I relied on them to be able to walk on my own! Very soon all I needed was Tylenol, though.

In your shoes I'd probably give the Tylenol regularly whether he seems to need it or not for maybe two weeks. If he's not fussing I'd probably skip the narcotics. I know he's a happy baby but if he was in serious pain I think he'd let you know....

  • I took Percocet for 1 days post op after c section then just took Motrin as needed. But normally even an as needed medication tells you how many hours in between like every 4-6? hours as needed or something like it to go by
  • I've only had morphine, but was on a self-dosing drip for 2-3 days post-op.
after that I got ibuprofen or Tylenol.

I had a cyst & ovary removed with internal bleeding. (Only on morphine 36 hours post-op, discharged at 3 days post-op)

Then intestinal blockage (morphine 3 days post-op, discharged 8 days later).

I hear wee ones heal much more quickly, so I'd only do the 'good stuff' up to a week, and try to stop 3-4 days post-op unless it seems he needs it.
  • I feel like you should be asking your son's doctor these questions rather than asking adults their experiences with pain meds.  Everyone's experiences are way different than your son's and we all perceive pain differently.
Sorry, big delay b/c I'm just seeing this. Obviously I have talked to his doctors. But I appreciate your admonition.
  • I tried to get off the heavy stuff ASAP, but that was because I felt responsible for LO and the hydrocodone made me feel high as shit. If the pain meds are for the baby that makes it totally different. What does your pediatrician say? My guess would be you would want to start weaning off them after 4 weeks.

Can you give him a smaller dose then?  Seems like it would still be effective - that is powerful stuff!  I know that babies brains process pain differently than ours do, so I would monitor him on low doses of pain meds, then look for subtle changes when he's not on them.  Does he keep his brow furrowed?  Move less or cry out suddenly when picked up?  Will must be a strong little man to have gone through so much.  He has a strong mama too!

Ummm not admonishing. Just saying that the experience of an adult using pain meds isn't really applicable to a baby.
Luckily I'm a bright enough girl to realize that. Hearing a general range of recovery times is still helpful for general reassurance purposes. I don't base his drug protocol on the experience of random strangers on the internet - I simply asked so that I could ease my worries some.

If I seem defensive it's b/c - holy hell - of course I'm asking his doctors! My whole life is wrapped around his medical needs these days.

But it's all moot - he's off all his meds now. Recovery has been a breeze! :)
