Toxoplasmosis

My cat was attacked by a dog and in the process of saving him I got scratched pretty bad on my arms. Went to the doc, got bandaged up and they drew blood.

Of course I'm freaking out thinking I saved my cat only to infect my unborn child and cause brain damage and more to him :(

Anyone have any experience with this? Like in a past pregnancy they got cat scratches from and indoor out door cat and nothing bad happened?

I don't find out till Monday if I have a new toxo infection or if I have already been infected and have antibodies to fight it in me already. Praying it's the last one.

I was attacked pretty bad by a stray kitten I was trying to help when I was only like 8w. Honestly after talking with my vet, the chances are REALLY low, especially if you've been exposed to cats all your life like I have. I take more precautions when cooking with pork then around cats. Hope the test shows you're fine, but I wouldn't stress too much over it.

    Thank you :)

My rational thinking is like: "you have had cats for 14 years, you have probably already been infected and should be fine." But my irrational catastric thinking is semi winning out!

    Monday can't come soon enough.

  • Oh no! I everything is fine both with your cat and you! If you've had your cat for a long time chances are you have previously been infected/built an immunity not that it makes you feel any better right now. Please keep us updated FX that everything is okay.
  • My cat scratched the crap out of me like 1 week before I gave birth with DS and I/he was fine. I understand your concern but I think the chances are really low.

  • I'm so sorry! When I was eight weeks pregnant with my first son I broke up a cat and dog fight at a friend's house. In the moment I completely forgot I was pregnant. I got bad scratches from the cat. Did not get an infection and my son is perfect. I worried the whole pregnancy though. Fingers crossed that everything is fine!!! Thankfully you're almost there and baby is well developed!

  • The cat would have been exposed to toxoplasmosis which is incredibly rare in itself-- then there is a 2 week hatching period where people get exposed. Like pp have said, extremely rare and unlikely- I wouldn't lose any sleep ;)

Thanks everyone! It is very helpful hearing from those who have had bad scratches from indoor/outdoor cats during their pregnancy and their kid turned out fine. I really appreciate that and need it!

  • I hope everything turns out okay!
  • I'm fairly certain the main risk is through contact (ingestion really) of the feces of a cat that has been infected. I'm sure you're fine!

Like MrsT2008 said I am fairly positive you can not get toxo through a scratch, the main concern is ingesting fecal material, which is why they tell you not to clean the litter box and avoid gardening since it can stay in the soil. I will also add just because you have been around cats does not mean you are most likely exposed. I have had pet cats all my life, grew up with indoor/outdoor ones, worked in multiple vet offices and boarding kennels for years, and have worked with exotic cats for the past three, and I still tested negative. That being said, the chance of you contracting it is really low. The cat has to be actively shedding the parasite at the time for you to catch it, and they typically only shed once in their lifetime if they even have it. You are more likely to catch it from handling raw meat. So I would not stress out too much, I am sure you and baby will be just fine :) Just keep an eye on the scratches because cat scratches are prone to infection.

So I have never had it. So I will be tested again in 2 weeks :( she has only seen one woman test positive for a new infection. So I'm praying the odds are in baby's favor.

@Carpenter627‌ it would have actually been better if they found antibodies. Then we wouldn't have to worry anymore!

But oh well. There's nothing we can do other than wait and hope he didn't have any infected feces on his claws when he got me.
