freaking out. inhaled burning plastic

a plastic bag flew onto a hot burner and got stuck to it and I flipped. I turned it off it didn't catch fire but melted all over the burner. it smelled awful! I opened all the windows and put on the fan and scraped the plastic off now I'm freaking out because I kno burning plastic turns into cyanide. my husband says I'm fine but I'm a bundle of nerves now. should I be this worried?

You can call poison control and ask.

  • It's not great for you but I doubt you inhaled enough to make you remotely sick. Like pp said you could call poison control to be safe.
  • If you're breathing ok and don't have any unusual symptoms then you're ok. If you're having trouble breathing then yes you need to contact someone. But I highly doubt that you inhaled enough to make you sick. If you were ok enough to walk around and open windows and turn the fan on you should be fine. If you do notice anything in the near future with your breathing that seems out of sorts call your Dr right away.

  • This actually happened to me when I was around 20 weeks pregnant. The plastic dial from my crockpot was too close to the stove burner and melted off. I called my OB, as I smelled something funny but didn't figure out what it was for a few minutes, so I had probably been inhaling it for 5-10 minutes by that point. The OB on call didn't really seem to think anything of it, and I felt kind of silly for calling. Personally, I would think you're fine (but I'm not a medical professional). You can always call for peace of mind!

  • I think you will be okay. I would guess if you inhaled something you would have symptoms pretty fast!
But if that does change, for sure go see a doctor.
  • thanks girls. I'm feeling fine no headache or feeling sick at all and the apt is aired out now so I think me and baby r ok! just spazzed out for a while! thanks for your input!

You have probably been exposed to more toxic things over the past 9 months than the plastic bag melting.
