Longer cycles?

I'm wondering If it is easier or harder to get pregnant if your cycle is longer, or is it just the same? I stopped the pill towards the beginning of March and today (4/29) I got my first period. Before taking any birth control my cycle was somewhat not regular and my cycle seemed to average about 45 days. I was so confused back then when my friends would pinpoint the exact day they would get their periods...I could never do that. Also, what is your favorite app for fertility tracking? I have an android.

Re: Longer cycles?

  • Ok also, I just went on a website to calculate my fertile days. It said that if your cycle is longer than 35 days to consult your doctor because you might not be ovulating.... I guess i will have to wait until I get my next period to see how long my cycle is now that I am off birth control.

  • Yeah, the TTGP blog is great. Fertility Friend has an app and website where you can learn all about tracking cycles.
  • All of what PPs said.  Length of your cycle doesn't matter if you are ovulating (but if you do go 60 days without your period, contact your doctor).  I was never regular before BCP, so I started charting simply to know when to expect my period.  It was a bonus for me to know when my FW would be once we started TTC.

It's not necessarily harder, though it is frustrating. I have very irregular cycles, and I was lucky enough to get pregnant the first try the first time, and on my third cycle (after a 34 and 48 day cycle) this time around. However, it would have been harder if I wasn't temping, which told me I was ovulating. I would have had no idea when my fertile window was without it! I second Fertility Friend, it's amazing.

  • My cycles are anywhere from 45-65 days and I have gotten pregnant 3 times within a normal time frame each time.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but you wouldn't be getting a period if you weren't ovulating right? So if you get your period, then you ovulate?

OP, I wouldn't necessarily say it would be harder to get pregnant with longer cycles. But it could take longer, since there are longer stretches between when you ovulate.
  • If you are ovulating, you will have the same chances at getting pregnant each cycle.  Typical stats I've seen say there is about a 25% chance you will get pregnant each cycle if you have good timing.  So if it takes on average 4 cycles to conceive, that would be ~4 months with 28 day cycles and ~6 months for 45 day cycles.  Definitely read the book Take Charge of Your Fertility.  Understanding your cycles is so helpful.

You can have bleeding with an anovulatory cycle.  It is common in women with hormone imbalances, especially PCOS and thyroid issues.
  • I have short cycles, mine in march was 20 days, the next month was 25 days, we will see what this month brings, suppose to be may 15th. I'm using ovia fertility and it's really good ( for me at least) good luck!
