TTC after 35

HSG question - What kind of drugs did you take?

I've had the HSG test before, and I figure it's probably good to do it again since it's been 2 years and its kind of a no brainer to make sure the tubes are clear at this point, however I had a really horrible time with the test. The RE had me take several Ibuprofen prior to the test, however he was running about 3 hours behind schedule so not only was a stressed, I'm pretty sure it had worn off by the time I went in for it.

I have a very tilted uterus, so any uti procedure sucks, but I also ended up having a spasm so he couldn't even get the dye into one of the tubes. The pain, while it only lasted for a few minutes was almost unbearable, I almost passed out...

Have any of you been given anything stronger to take, I'm thinking like a muscle relaxer?? I wasn't offered that as an option and I know if I do this again, I'm going to need something better than ibuprofren!!!

Re: HSG question - What kind of drugs did you take?

  • I think I also took Advil but was not offered anything stronger for mine. I also had severe pain, and have a tilted ute, I wonder if there is a connection? It wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor if they would give you something else.

  • I don't have a tilted uterus so it wasn't that bad for me. I might have taken Motrin afterwards once after the procedure.
  • My first I took nothing and was fine. My second I thought I would be fine and it was terrible, I blame it on the residents (it took three different to get it in). My pain came much later and I took pain reliever with anti inflammatory (just over the counter) good luck.
  • I took just advil.... for my hysterscopy it was so painful that I asked for something stronger and they gave me some pain pills

    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • Well I took Advil..but if I had known the pain I would of demanded something stronger. I have tilted uterus too... I would definitely ask for something .

  • It must be the tilted uterus thing because my HSG was AWFUL. OMG, I wanted to pass out and felt horrible. I had noooo idea that it could even hurt, so I went in blindly. I took two tylenol ahead of time but I was rendered uself for the remainder of the day

  • I didn't take anything and I was ok. It definitely wasn't comfortable, but I think a lot of that was the anticipation and build up in my head. There wasn't any pain. I did cramp and spot a little afterwards. Overall it was NBD.

I also have a tilted uterus and a closed cervix, they had me take Advil and it did squat! I was in so much pain I thought I was going to stop the procedure. I have a high pain tolerance so it was pretty bad for me to show this much outwardly. I got through it, but I don't think they would have let me take stronger. I never asked because it would have been too late.
I think we should make a club of the tilted uterus girls. Jk
  • I'm so glad that I'm reading this tonight. I had my first RE appointment today and one of the tests on the list is HSG. @IFinTN - I like the valium idea. Thanks!

Valium is sounding good to me! I think the uterine spasm I had didnt help and basically made the whole test pointless anyway. They had told me they dont usually give anything stronger because then they have to  make sure you bring someone with you ect, I think DH can deal with that request. I also spotted sometimes heavy for at least two weeks after. Overall not a good experiience
