I haven't told my boss yet

I've been putting off telling my boss that I'm pregnant for a few reasons. First, I wanted to wait until after my 16 week appointment just to make sure everything was okay with this pregnancy. I had a loss last year and had to tell my boss that I needed the next day off for the D & C when I was only 8 weeks along ("By the way, I was pregnant and now I'm not and I need tomorrow off for surgery" - Not fun!). I'm still a little paranoid even though everything with this pregnancy has been fine so far.

I work for a very small company and my boss relies on me heavily, so I'm dreading telling him that I'm due in early Oct. and that I plan to take off the remainder of the year for maternity leave. We all work remotely and don't get to see each other in person very often. It's been extremely busy for us recently and we haven't had a chance to talk very much. I don't want to have to tell him over the phone, but I don't have a choice.

I think today has to be the day that I make the announcement, especially since I'll be 18 weeks on Monday. Any advice??

Re: I haven't told my boss yet

  • I finally told my boss yesterday and he was actually really excited for us.  I had built it up to be this big thing in my mind, but really there was nothing to worry about.  I would just take a big breath and go for it.

  • Is your job busy during the holidays?
If not, that is an upside... At least that's what I plan on telling my boss..."the good thing is I will be on maternity leave when the office is quiet and you won't need as much coverage"

    Good luck!!!

  • I understand your hesitation, but it's best to get out of the way and out in the open IMO. This is my second baby where I will be off for the holidays on maternity leave, and I'm afraid I don't feel too guilty.....

  • I think it is fine that you have waited until now to tell your boss. It still gives your boss plenty of time to prepare. When I was pregnant with Jeffrey, I waited until I was 19 weeks. I was high risk and just didnt feel comfortable telling people at work until then. I haven't told my boss yet this time, but plan to next week (I will be 16 weeks). Good luck!

I still haven't told my work and I'll be 17 weeks on Monday. I suppose I will have to do it sooner or later. I'm dreading it.
  • I agree you should just do it! Good luck!! I haven't told my bosses yet either, but my plan is to do it as soon as I can. I was planning to tell one on Friday until she had to rush out of our meeting early. I was so bummed since I had spent half an hour before the meeting pumping myself up to just do it already!

  • I was so stressed out about telling work it actually made my blood pressure noticeably higher. I told them and they were really supportive and have been doing everything they can to help me out. I was shocked, because I am taking six months of maternity leave and it is during the busiest six months of our year.

I guess I didn't worry so much about telling mine. It is kind of expected that something along these lines was going to happen. Women tend to have babies. It is never convenient but it is how we all got here :D

I hope they take it well and they have some time to adjust.

Good luck! Let us know how it went!

BTW, I had an employee who became pregnant right after she was hired. I think she was too afraid to tell me because one day I just asked her since she had a pretty obvious, probably 6 month, bump. It wasn't a big deal that I had to ask; however, some bosses would probably prefer to know more ahead simply for the planning aspect of it.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I just told my boss and he took is extremely well. He was happy for me and even joked about how he would survive while I'm gone. He wasn't completely surprised either because of all the doctor appointments I've had.
