Help on potty training?

We are trying to start B on potty training. He had held his bowels overnight for a while so we thought he was ready. 
We got training pull up and diapers and now he wants nothing to do with it. He just sits on the potty and does nothing. 
We put him on the potty right in the morning (but he has a full diaper), after every meal and before bed. He does nothing
on the potty but then when he goes back in his diaper he goes. I don't get it. 

Any advise would be helpful.
Is he not ready yet? He's going to pre school at 3- 3.5 and he needs to be potty trained. At this point, I don't see that happening.

    It doesn't sound like he's ready to me, but I have no experience yet with potty training. I'd take him a lot more often though, about every 20-30 minutes, just to try.
