Adoption

Intro

Hi all,

I am new to these boards, and the adoption process. My husband was adopted when he was a toddler and we have agreed we wanted to adopt our entire relationship.

We are interested in adopting through state system, as that was how my husband was adopted. We are open to other kinds of adoption as well, depending on what come our way. Currently, we are to attend our first information session about the process on Monday, although we did have an introductory interview where they took down our information late last week.

Any advice on what to expect would be awesome. We are both really excited to begin the journey to parenthood. :)

  • Welcome!

We didn't adopt through the state, so I have no experience to share. I'm anxious to hear how your info session!

  • Welcome!  The only way for us to adopt through the state is foster to adopt, unless we were willing to take some very medically challenged kiddos...which we believe is beyond our abilities right now.

We think it will be a blessing for us, but definitely not without it's challenges.  We do not really have an option for no legal risk, unless we have a safe haven baby, but there's only one or two of those a year in our area.

It's a wild ride, but with the right support, so worth it! Are you planning to straight adopt or foster/adopt? You will learn so much in training, and hopefully make some lasting friendships through your agency! I met my best friend in training and she's been a Godsend, being there to go through the ups and downs with.

  • From what the social worker said it sounds like we would straight adopt, but we are open/ were planning to foster adopt. I guess we will find out more when we go Monday :)
