2nd Trimester

pain under ribcage

I spoke with my doctor today over the phone and now I'm a little worried!  I called regarding pain on the right side under my rib cage.  Also, under my shoulder blade on my back is sore.  I assumed it was because baby and I feel huge, and was calling for ideas/tips to alleviate the discomfort.  Well the doctor said that I had to come in tomorrow because they need to check and see if I am having gallbladder issues?!?!  I'm a little anxious about my appointment because I didn't think anything was that wrong... anyone else been through this or have this going on now?

Re: pain under ribcage

  • I've had pains in various spots throughout my pregnancy.  I've learned your body does and feels all sorts of different things and there's nothing you can do about it! I had the horrible kink under my shoulder blade.  It was so painful!  I went to my chiropractor and he worked it out and I felt amazing after that.  If you do that, make sure the chiro is comfortable and specialized in prenatal.  I would say the rib cage thing is probably where the baby is sitting just east small meals often and try stretching out your abdomen to help out.

  • I had pain on my right side near the bottom of my ribcage.  Options were pre-e, gall bladder, broken/misplaced/cracked rib from throwing up, pulled muscle, heartburn.  I had an ultrasound for gall bladder, monitored extra and steroid shots for pre-e (which I didn't have), and got some meds for heartburn, which did not help and which I knew I did not have.  I saw an osteopath for pain once those were ruled out.  Nothing helped.  It went away after pregnancy.  Now it is starting to come back.  Sometimes there's not much you can do, I guess.  It's nice to rule things out.
  • I had gallbladder pain & kidney pain during my last pg. Turns out I had stones. Lots & lots of water. Like, chug that shit.

    I'm sorry. I know it's painful.

  • Thank you ladies!  I would definitely agree that it is very uncomfortable. I'm sorry that anyone should I have to go through this!!!!  I will be going tomorrow morning to get a scan for the gallbladder and they said I did not have pre-e.  I'm actually praying it is just growing pains but only the ultrasound will tell.  Thanks for your support/ideas!
  • Well after ruling out gallbladder, it seems that my LO is bruising my ribcage and I will just have to deal with it.  Actually relieved it is nothing more serious but it is still quite painful.  Secretly this makes me want to be done with getting kicked in the ribs though!  Come on July...
  • I too am having horrible rib pain. Sometimes it feels like a pulled muscle and after laying down for a few hours it intensifies and becomes sharp pain. I even am having muscle spasms because the pain is so severe. Was checked out by the doctor...nothing wrong with gall bladder, kidneys, anything and basically she summed it up as pregnancy sucks for some women. I am on a prescription heartburn medication and I'm watching what I eat i.e. No tomatoes, onions, spicy or vinegar thing. If this doesn't work, which doesn't seem to be, I'll try a muscle relaxer and if that doesn't work I'll see an orthopedic doctor. Try different sleep positions and warm baths and Tylenol PM if it happens at night when you sleep. But don't be surprised if doctor can't offer immediate relief. :-(
  • I'm sorry all in this thread. Pain like that is horrific. I hope the rest of your pregnancies fly by!

The only thing that alleviated some of my pain issues was floating in the pool. Grab a floaty noodle and float. It's magical.
